Additionally, we passed two resolutions at the AGM:

  1. The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace calls on the federal Liberal government to end its complicity in the ongoing Israeli genocide/war against Palestinians (and now Lebanese) by immediately stopping the supply of any further weapons, components, and military technology to Israel, directly or through the US. We call on the Canadian government to uphold its moral and legal responsibilities and impose a full and immediate two-way arms embargo on Israel, including those arms already approved.

  2. The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace urges the Nuclear Waste Management Organization to establish secure storage solutions for nuclear waste in the vicinity of the reactor stations where the waste has been generated and is currently stored. We oppose the transport, burial, and abandonment of this radioactive waste.

Thank you again for your ongoing support and dedication to peace. Together, we continue to advocate for meaningful change!

THE TRUST FALL: JULIAN ASSANGE
Online Video
After spending five years in Belmarsh Prison (in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day), and 14 years facing extradition to the U.S. for releasing documents exposing war crimes, human rights abuses and government corruption, Julian Assange was finally freed on June 25th of this year. This came about only because he agreed to time served in exchange for pleading guilty to a felony charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified information. In his first public statement after his release, Julian told the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE): "I eventually chose freedom over unrealizable justice after being detained for years and facing a 175-year sentence with no effective remedy. I am not free today because the system worked. I am free today, after years of incarceration, because I pled guilty to journalism." Julian's case continues to have serious implications for all journalists and publishers who seek to share uncomfortable truths about their government's actions. There is now an active coalition working to obtain a pardon for Julian (https://www.action.assangecampaign.org.au/). In October, PACE recognized Julian as a political prisoner.

In February, VOW sponsored an online, on-demand screening of the film, ITHAKA which many of you attended, and we would now like to encourage you to view another extraordinary documentary about Julian that is now available to watch online (details below). The film includes interviews with exceptional supporters of Julian such as the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer, and the now deceased John Pilger and Daniel Ellsberg, and offers startling insight into the government collusion involved in the persecution, prosecution and demonization of Julian Assange.

As Julian has so eloquently stated: "To keep a person ignorant is to place them in a cage. The powerful – if they want to keep their power – will try to know as much about us as they can, and they will try to make sure that we know as little about them as is possible." The Trust Fall is illuminating on so many levels. We hope you will watch it.

Arms Embargo NOW
We’re coming together to demand the Canadian government impose a full, immediate arms embargo on Israel.

Canadian companies and subsidiaries supply a wide range of components to Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jet program, from machined parts, fuselage sections, and electro-hydraulic actuation system components, to power & thermal management system controllers...
  • Companies that participate in the F-35 program include: Honeywell, Magellan Aerospace, Apex Industries, ASCO Aerospace Canada, Ben Machine Products, PCC Aerostructures Centra and others.
  • Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jets have become emblematic of the loophole that allows Canadian-made weapons components to be transferred, unregulated and unreported, to Israel via the U.S.
  • Héroux-Devtek, headquartered in Quebec, contributes parts and landing gear to Boeing’s F-15 fighter jet  program. It’s among the Canadian companies that supply components for Boeing’s F-15s, which are used by the Israeli Air Force to bomb Gaza.
  • Canadian companies also supply parts for Boeing’s AH-64 Apache helicopters, which are also used by the Israeli Air Force.

Justice Minister Arif Virani must declare Diab’s innocence and refuse a second extradition NOW!

Tell Scotia Bank to Divest Completely from Elbit Systems!

Scotiabank’s global asset fund has reduced its half billion dollar investment in Elbit 4 times, but still owns 1.3% of Elbit shares (worth US$112 million as of Sept. 30/24 and now worth over US$130 million). Many groups and individuals have been part of the campaign to say #ShameonScotiabank for funding Israeli genocide; it is this collective pressure that has produced results.

As Palestine Action noted: “Elbit Systems, based in Haifa, is Israel’s largest private arms manufacturer and security company. Elbit’s largest customer is the Israeli Ministry of Defence, with Elbit providing up to 85% of Israel’s land-based military equipment and approximately 85% of its drones.”

Our first action campaign resulted in over 13,000 letters being sent to Scotiabank management. Join us as we continue to expose and shame such blatant war profiteering from Scotiabank!

Stop Killer Robots: #VoteAgainstTheMachine

You are more than data so states need to vote against the machine at this year’s UNGA.

Machines don’t know that you’re #MoreThanData - to them you’re just another piece of code. It’s time to take AI making life and death decisions off the table.

The regulation of Artificial Intelligence needs to catch up to the pace of innovation. If we accept the use of AI to dehumanize and kill people in conflicts, this has consequences for the use of these technologies in policing, border control and more. Call on your gov’t to #VoteAgainstTheMachine and support the resolution against killer robots at the UNGA this October.

Days of Significance
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 17th, 2025

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law.

King’s notion of nonviolence had six key principles. First, one can resist evil without resorting to violence. Second, nonviolence seeks to win the “friendship and understanding” of the opponent, not to humiliate him (King, Stride, 84). Third, evil itself, not the people committing evil acts, should be opposed. Fourth, those committed to nonviolence must be willing to suffer without retaliation as suffering itself can be redemptive. Fifth, nonviolent resistance avoids “external physical violence” and “internal violence of spirit” as well: “The nonviolent resister not only refuses to shoot his opponent but he also refuses to hate him” (King, Stride, 85). The resister should be motivated by love in the sense of the Greek word agape, which means “understanding,” or “redeeming good will for all men” (King, Stride, 86). The sixth principle is that the nonviolent resister must have a “deep faith in the future,” stemming from the conviction that “The universe is on the side of justice” (King, Stride, 88).

International Day of Education

January 24th, 2025

Learning for peace must be a transformative process, enabling learners to gain essential knowledge, values, attitudes, skills, and behaviors, thereby empowering them to serve as catalysts for peace in their communities. The foundation of more peaceful, just, and sustainable societies is laid through education, a force that permeates every facet of our daily lives and overall prospects. In the face of escalating climate change, democratic erosion, persistent inequalities, growing discrimination, hate speech, violence, and conflict on a global scale, education emerges as a powerful tool to both address and prevent these challenges in the future. Moreover, when effectively shaped and implemented, education becomes a long-term investment with increasing returns.

An active commitment to peace is more urgent today than ever: Education is central to this endeavor.

FOCUS: A-bomb survivors' Nobel prize win highlights receding nuke taboo

Kyodo News

By: Toma Mochizuki

Nihon Hidankyo's decades-long campaign to draw attention to the horrors of nuclear warfare won recognition with its receipt of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, with the award committee praising the role its efforts have played in making the resort to nuclear weapons a global taboo.

But the accolade for the survivors of the 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is also a sign of how urgent the issue has become amid heightened global tensions, and comes as experts worry about what will happen when the voices of the group's aging members finally fall silent.

Canada’s Arctic Foreign Policy

Government of Canada

Ottawa’s new Arctic Foreign Policy is a plan for greater militarization of the northern territories. NATO + NORAD mentioned 33 times and most of the funding is for their modernization $38.6 billion, but only $20 million for sustainable development research! Climate change mentioned 39 times roughly the same amount as NATO-NORAD. But this Arctic Strategy is about moving fossil fuel powered F-35 fighter jets, destroyers, submarines, attack helicopters up the north that will exacerbate the climate crisis and further warm this vulnerable oceanic ecosystem.

Canada’s new Arctic Foreign Policy does not represent women, peace & security at all. The word “women” is NOT even mentioned once!
