Reflections: LA Fires Vigil
Toronto Event

On January 19, 2025 - moved by the wildfires in Los Angeles - ClimateFast and many other climate action organizations gathered at Bloor and Spadina to call attention to this latest in a string of global climate disasters. We've seen deadly heatwaves in Asia and Europe, droughts in Africa and Central America, flooding in North Carolina and here at home in Toronto – and all within the last year!

We were moved to ask "where is our climate leadership?" On the eve of the inauguration of the most anti-climate president ever, and as our federal and provincial governments ramp up for elections in the coming weeks, we laid out some of what we expect from each level of government.

Our vigil received a lot of interest from the media. CBC, Global, CityTV and CP24 covered our candlelight vigil and our asks for climate leadership. VOW Co-Chair Lyn Adamson gave several interviews to the media, and was the emcee for a rally with seven excellent speakers.  Thanks to musicians Cassie Norton, Tania Gill, and Nigel Barriffe for adding energy and harmony to our dark and snowy evening.

YOUTH: New Generation of
Leadership for Global Peace

By VOW Co-Chair Hannah Hadikin

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reminds us:

“In today’s troubled world, building peace is a conscious, bold, and even radical act. It is humanity’s greatest responsibility that belongs to us all – individually and collectively.”

Troubled world indeed. Reflections on the year past, bring very little cheer.  Resolutions seem futile, bright lights appear to have lost their splendor, bringing glad tidings with the ringing of ‘holly jolly’, all the while the bells of peace are silent in many countries. Looking ahead at a globalized world which remains clouded with more of the same as witnessed in 2024. Instability of global affairs unresolved from year to year, hampering hope for a world without war.

Meanwhile, the military-industrial complex continues to expand, weaponizing armed conflicts and wars, creating humanitarian disasters along with the destruction of the planet. Wars are among the worst threats to earth’s climate, causing floods, droughts, deeper poverty and the deterioration of social conditions. Multinational corporations continue looting high-value resources, stashing the stolen proceeds into private banks, leaving developing countries trapped with crippling debt.

VOW Member Kasha Slavner's
1.5 Degrees of Peace Documentary

1.5 Degrees of Peace, a character-driven feature documentary produced by VOW member Kasha Slavner, following the stories of four young activists, in regions impacted by the interconnected forces driving climate change: militarization, conflicts, and systemic violence. The film contrasts the protagonists in their struggle for environmental justice, disarmament, and demilitarization, with the revolutionary love, community, and visionary solutions that exist within these movements.

Climate Voting Records Toronto Website Launch Party (& Information Session)
In-Person Event

February 1st, 2025
6:00-8:00 PM ET
Friends House, 60 Lowther Avenue, Toronto, ON

What is the Climate Voting Records Toronto Website?

Over the past year, members of ClimateFast have been building a website that tracks what climate policies are being passed by Toronto’s City Council each month and how councillors are voting on climate action.

Why is it important?

Climate action is urgent! The City has a target of reducing emissions by 65% below 1990 levels by 2030 - and we are struggling to even meet the 2025 target of 45% below 1990 levels. The City is writing a new 5 year climate action plan that will come to City Council in June, 2025. We need councillors to know that their constituents want to see meaningful reductions in emissions, and that we want them to vote in favour of the bold new measures we will need the city to take to achieve our goal.

Trump's second term:
NATO, War, and the Economy
Virtual Event

February 18, 2025
1:00-3:00pm ET

Donald Trump has returned to the presidency demanding that NATO nations increase their military spending to 3%, possibly 5% of GDP, and threating massive tariffs. His commitments to NATO remain uncertain, as does his administration’s approach to the Ukraine War and possible ceasefire-related diplomacy. His “America First” agenda includes a $100 billion increase in the Pentagon’s already gargantuan budget.

What are the implications for Euro-American relations with Russia, for NATO or pressures for an independent European military, for the U.S., European, and world economies? How should U..S. and European peace movements respond?

We call on individuals and organizations around the world to join the Global Day of Action to #CloseBases on February 23 by organizing protests at military base sites near you.

Tell Scotia Bank to Divest Completely from Elbit Systems!

Scotiabank’s global asset fund has reduced its half billion dollar investment in Elbit 4 times, but still owns 1.3% of Elbit shares (worth US$112 million as of Sept. 30/24 and now worth over US$130 million). Many groups and individuals have been part of the campaign to say #ShameonScotiabank for funding Israeli genocide; it is this collective pressure that has produced results.

As Palestine Action noted: “Elbit Systems, based in Haifa, is Israel’s largest private arms manufacturer and security company. Elbit’s largest customer is the Israeli Ministry of Defence, with Elbit providing up to 85% of Israel’s land-based military equipment and approximately 85% of its drones.”

Our first action campaign resulted in over 13,000 letters being sent to Scotiabank management. Join us as we continue to expose and shame such blatant war profiteering from Scotiabank!

Stop Killer Robots: #VoteAgainstTheMachine

You are more than data so states need to vote against the machine at this year’s UNGA.

Machines don’t know that you’re #MoreThanData - to them you’re just another piece of code. It’s time to take AI making life and death decisions off the table.

The regulation of Artificial Intelligence needs to catch up to the pace of innovation. If we accept the use of AI to dehumanize and kill people in conflicts, this has consequences for the use of these technologies in policing, border control and more. Call on your gov’t to #VoteAgainstTheMachine and support the resolution against killer robots at the UNGA this October.

Black History Month

Black Legacy and Leadership:
Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations

“The history of Black communities in Canada is an integral part of Canadian history. This year’s theme is about reflecting and celebrating the contributions of Black Canadians in shaping our country while paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive future. In Canada, diversity is a fact, but inclusion is a choice; for far too long Black communities in Canada have been faced with anti-Black and systemic racism...Black History Month offers us all a valuable opportunity to learn more about the diversity of Black communities across the country, and to listen to and be open with one another on what we can do to build a better, more inclusive Canada.”

— The Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities

89 seconds to midnight: Doomsday clock moving forward highlights urgency of Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty

International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has reset the second hand on the Doomsday Clock to 89 seconds to midnight, citing the lack of sufficient action to reverse major crises such as climate change and the nuclear threat. This is the closest the clock has ever been to midnight. In presenting the new time, former Colombian President Santos also highlighted the importance of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) as a path out of this current situation.

“To those countries that want to see an end to the madness of nuclear proliferation which has seen a 34% increase in spending in the last five years on nuclear weapons, with trillions more planned that could be  spent on saving our planet or reducing poverty, I urge you to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Half of all the countries have signed it so, it has momentum.”

Code Pink

We continue to watch the second hand on the Doomsday Clock move closer to doom! This is not engaging, or educational and it is not inspiring the masses to throw themselves in front of the creation of more nuclear weapons. We need to move the second hand to peace, to the abolition of nuclear weapons. It takes millions of small acts of resistance and building. Indigenous group vows to stop nuclear waste shipments unless new deal struck

CTV News

Leaders with the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) say they are no longer willing to have their territory “exploited” for the production of nuclear energy and storage of radioactive waste.

“The nuclear issue has the biggest footprint in the Saugeen Ojibway Territory. It’s the biggest footprint bearing on the environmental imprint, so we need to start getting some of that stuff resolved,” said Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation Coun. Paul Jones.

The SON is home to Bruce Power, the world’s largest operating nuclear station, as well as Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Western Waste Management Facility that houses most of Ontario’s nuclear waste.

25 Reflections for 25 Years: Realizing the Transformative Potential of Resolution 1325

Women, Peace and Security Network-Canada

As 2025 marks the 25th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325), the global Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda stands at a crossroads. Adopted in 2000, the resolution was a landmark moment, highlighting the importance of women’s inclusion in peace processes and recognizing the gendered impacts of conflict. Yet, in 2025, as the world grows increasingly violent and militarized, the agenda faces profound challenges. From the genocide in Gaza to the ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Haiti, Myanmar, Sudan, Ukraine, and beyond, the WPS agenda must navigate a rapidly shifting and deeply fractured global landscape.

Canada’s Arctic Foreign Policy

Government of Canada

Ottawa’s new Arctic Foreign Policy is a plan for greater militarization of the northern territories. NATO + NORAD mentioned 33 times and most of the funding is for their modernization $38.6 billion, but only $20 million for sustainable development research! Climate change mentioned 39 times roughly the same amount as NATO-NORAD. But this Arctic Strategy is about moving fossil fuel powered F-35 fighter jets, destroyers, submarines, attack helicopters up the north that will exacerbate the climate crisis and further warm this vulnerable oceanic ecosystem.

Canada’s new Arctic Foreign Policy does not represent women, peace & security at all. The word “women” is NOT even mentioned once!
