Global Campaign on Military Spending
Campaign

April 10th-May 9th, 2025

Over the past year, the world has witnessed an alarming escalation of violence: the genocide in Gaza, the war in Ukraine, the civil war in Sudan, the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and more than 30 other armed conflicts in the Global South (half of them in Africa) have led to millions of people being killed, injured, losing their livelihood or being forcibly displaced. Still further violent conflicts loom on the horizon as global tensions escalate and competition between nations grows while international law and conflict mediation and resolution bodies like the United Nations are sidelined or ignored.

Militarism is clearly fuelling all these wars and violence, but despite calls to move away from weapons and violence to peace negotiations and disarmament, governments are doubling down on a recipe for disaster by significantly increasing their military budgets. Instead of seeking paths toward peace by investing in diplomacy, humanitarian aid, and conflict resolution, they’ve decided to hand out more and more money to the arms industry. History has repeatedly shown that militarization brings neither peace nor security; it perpetuates cycles of destruction, suffering, and injustice and fuels climate breakdown. Militarization is therefore not a solution, but a part of the problem.

The Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons-3rd Session
Virtual Event
Monday, April 28th-
Friday, May 9th, 2025

The Preparatory Committee for the 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will hold its third session from 28 April to 9 May 2025 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Preparatory Committee, open to all states parties to the Treaty, is responsible for addressing substantive and procedural issues related to the Treaty and the forthcoming Review Conference. The Chair of the third session is Ambassador Harold Agyeman, Permanent Representative of Ghana to the United Nations.

Reaching Critical Will (WILPF) is the civil society coordinator for this meeting, and you can find related information here.

ICAN has sent a briefing paper (English & French) to supportive governments, outlining key demands and priorities. You can use this as a tool in your advocacy — with ministries, diplomats, and parliamentarians.

The briefing paper highlights a few key points, including:

  • Promoting new nuclear proliferation, cooperation, sharing and stationing arrangements are not only in direct conflict with existing NPT non-proliferation and disarmament commitments, but also further increase the already all-time high risk of nuclear weapons use.

  • The perpetual reliance on nuclear weapons in some states' security strategies actively diminishes the legitimate right to security of non-nuclear-armed states, and undermines the principles and objectives of the NPT.

Safeguarding Canada's Sovereignty: Nonviolent Civilian Defence

Panelists: Jamila Raqib: Executive Director of the Albert Einstein Institution, focusing on practical strategies for nonviolent action. Richard Sandbrook : Professor Emeritus of Political Science at U of T and former chair of the Nonviolence Working Group at SfP.

Civilian defence is the most effective strategy to deter and defeat a military incursion in southern Canada. This strategy involves deterring any incursions and, if necessary, defeating an invader by paralyzing the occupying forces while mobilizing support among the occupying troops, the American population, and countries abroad. It has the added benefit of training people to deal with extreme weather events coming our way as a result of climate change.

With the rallying cry of life, liberty, and love, Zadie and Charlie fly across America leaving a wake of revolution in their path. Passion erupts. Danger abounds. The lives of millions hang by a thread. The golden soul of humanity blossoms . . . and wonders start to unfold!

Israel has killed over 50,000 Palestinians in the last 18 months—including 20,000 children. Our country is complicit in these ongoing deaths by buying and selling military goods and technology with Israel. Canada is even profiting off these murders.

Cancel F35 contract. Canada shouldn’t spend billions on US fighter jets
Petition

Amidst Trump's economic siege and annexationist threats, it is unacceptable Canada is paying a US military giant $19 billion for 88 F-35s. Lockheed Martin’s fighter jet was chosen in part so the Canadian air force can better assist their US counterparts in offensive global operations. The US controls the F-35 source code and upgrades, giving Washington an effective “kill switch” on Canada’s fighter jets. Please take a minute to ask new Prime Minister Mark Carney to halt plans to buy F-35s, along with copies to the Opposition leaders:

Machines don’t know that you’re #MoreThanData - to them you’re just another piece of code. It’s time to take AI making life and death decisions off the table.

The regulation of Artificial Intelligence needs to catch up to the pace of innovation. If we accept the use of AI to dehumanize and kill people in conflicts, this has consequences for the use of these technologies in policing, border control and more. Days of Significance
Red Dress Day, Remember Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirited People

May 5th, 2025

Red Dress Day 2025, held every May 5th, is a National Day of remembrance and activism honouring the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited People (MMIWG2S+). It began with the REDress Project, created by Métis artist Jaime Black in 2010. On this day, red dresses will be draped in trees, hanging from windows, pinned to jackets, worn as earrings and red hands painted across faces, people will be partaking in rally’s and ceremonies to honour their loved ones, participating as ally’s and fighting for justice.

The MMIWG Report refers to the FINAL Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls released in June 2019.  It is the result of over two years of gathering testimonies from more than 2,380 individuals including family members of missing and murdered women, survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers,  front-line workers and experts. The inquiries’ mandate was to investigate and report on systemic causes of the violence experienced by Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples in Canada and proposed solutions. The report is two volumes and contains 231 Calls for Justice, directed at governments, institutions, social services, industries and all Canadians.

Indigenous women, girls and 2 Spirited people face a human rights crisis in Canada, the violence that they face amounts to genocide called by the MMIWG Report. It is not just a crisis – it is a national shame. Canada has built systems that disappear Indigenous women from the Indian Act to modern policing. These broken structures are doing what they were designee to do: erase Indigenous presence, silence Indigenous voices, and sever Indigenous futures.

Mothers' Day

May 11th, 2025

CODEPINK

Mother’s Day is rooted in a call from Mother to end war, at the end of Julia Ward Howe’s proclamation she calls on us to gather for the ‘great and general interests of peace’. In years past we have brought our message and gathering outside the White House, but this year we pivot to remembering we the people are the power and it is us who are cultivating the future of peace for all life.  What can you do locally to bring the practices of peace to those at the most horrific effects of the war economy?  Or practice yourselves together, the Peace Economy; the giving, sharing, caring, thriving, relational economy without which none of us would be alive.

Start planning now.  Just pivoting to peace will also begin to nourish your hearts.  Below are some ideas and links to how. Take Action!

International Conscientious Objectors Day

May 15th, 2025

Every year, 15th May marks International Conscientious Objection Day (CO day) - a day to celebrate those who have, and those who continue, to resist war, especially by refusing to be part of military structures.

If you would like to take part in CO day, contact us.

Take Action:

On May 15, the International Conscientious Objection Day, we want to send out a powerful joint message for peace and the right to refuse to kill. Especially in times of global armed conflict, it is more important than ever to promote public debate on conscription, conscientious objection and alternatives to the military.

Through #RefuseWar international action we have been able to collect voices from around the world standing for peace and objecting to war.

The International Conscientious Objection Day is an opportunity to restate our commitment and to raise our voice against war and in favor of disarmament. This is becoming even more urgent because of all the new plans and public discussions on the so-called need for re-armament and stronger armed defence by many State actors across the world today.

International Women's Day for Peace and Disarmament

May 24th, 2025

In the early 1980s, a group of pacifist feminists from across Europe united to protest the buildup of arms and nuclear weapons. Together, they established 24 May as International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament.

As feminist peace activists from around the world, we continue to demand that governments take immediate action to end the daily threat and impact of weapons on people and communities everywhere.

Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) stands in solidarity with women around the world in marking International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament this May 24th. As one of Canada’s longest-standing feminist peace organizations, VOW is deeply committed to advancing women’s leadership in peacebuilding, promoting disarmament, and advocating for a world free from violence. On this day, we celebrate the power of collective action, peace voices, and reaffirm our dedication to creating a just, peaceful future for all.

Black Lives Matter

May 25th, 2025

In 2013, three radical Black organizers — Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi — created a Black-centered political-movement-building project called #BlackLivesMatter in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman.

In 2014, Mike Brown was murdered by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. During Labor Day weekend that same year, Darnell Moore and Patrisse Cullors organized a national caravan called the Black Life Matters Ride. In 15 days, a plan of action was developed and successfully gathered over 600 people to occupy the territory of St. Louis to support our brothers and sisters in demonstration. During this time, organizers made two key commitments: to support the team on the ground in St. Louis, and to go back home and continue to do the work, wherever home was. It was understood that Ferguson was not an aberration, but in fact a clear point of reference for what was happening to Black communities everywhere.

Inspired by our friends in Ferguson, organizers from 18 different cities went back home and developed Black Lives Matter chapters in their communities and towns, broadening the political will and movement-building reach catalyzed by the #BlackLivesMatter project and that groundwork in Ferguson.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network would not be recognized worldwide had it not been for the folks in St. Louis and Ferguson who put their bodies on the line all those years ago and who continue, day in and day out, to show up for Black lives.

International Day for UN Peacekeepers

May 29th, 2025

Over the years, peacekeeping has evolved to adapt to the changing political landscape and nature of conflicts which have become more complex and interconnected. With support from UN member countries, it continues to advance the path set forth in the UN Secretary-General’s New Agenda for Peace which calls for a more robust, holistic and collective response to the security threats of today and tomorrow.

Despite the challenges, peacekeepers persevere, alongside many partners, in the collective pursuit of peace. The International Day pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of peacekeepers and the resilience of the communities that they serve. It honours the more than 4,000 peacekeepers who have lost their lives serving for peace.

This campaign also calls on each of us to join the global movement for peace. Alone, we can never succeed. But, together, we can be a strong force for change.

NHK World Japan

Survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have embarked on a global voyage aboard the Peace Boat to appeal for the abolition of nuclear weapons, 80 years after the end of World War Two.
The Peace Boat, which is operated by a Japan-based international NGO of the same name, left the port of Yokohama near Tokyo on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025.
The ship will visit 18 countries, including the United States and European nations, during its roughly three-month voyage.
The survivors will speak about their experiences and mingle with local people at ports of call.
There will also be an onboard exhibit introducing the activities of Nihon Hidankyo, a group representing atomic bomb survivors that won last year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Prompted by President Trump’s statements that he wants denuclearisation talks with President Putin and Moscow saying it is open to the idea, the three organisations sent a letter to the two governments urging them to follow the example of Presidents Reagan and Gorbachev who met in Iceland in 1986 and agreed the deepest cuts ever in their countries’ respective nuclear forces.

Status of World Nuclear Forces

Federation of American Scientists

Text by Hans Kristensen & Matt Korda & Eliana Johns & Mackenzie Knight & Kate Kohn

Despite progress in reducing nuclear weapon arsenals since the Cold War, the world’s combined inventory of nuclear warheads remains at a very high level: nine countries possessed roughly 12,331 warheads as of the beginning of 2025.

Combined, the United States and Russia now possess approximately 88 percent of the world’s total inventory of nuclear weapons, and 84 percent of the stockpiled warheads available for use by the military. Currently, no other nuclear-armed state sees a need for more than a few hundred nuclear weapons for national security, although many of these states are increasing their nuclear stockpiles.

Globally, the overall inventory of nuclear weapons is declining, but the pace of reductions is slowing compared with the past 30 years. Moreover, these reductions are happening only because the United States and Russia are still dismantling previously retired warheads.

In contrast to the overall inventory of nuclear weapons, the number of warheads in global military stockpiles – which comprises warheads assigned to operational forces – is increasing once again.

The Chernobyl nuclear disaster 39 years on

The International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War

PALESTINE IS A CANADIAN WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY ISSUE: OBLIGATIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES

The Palestine Working Group of the Women, Peace and Security Network-Canada (WPSN-C)

As concerned Canadian feminists, humanitarians, parents, and simply as human beings, we exercise our responsibility to engage in actions whenever and wherever possible. We do this with the aim of drawing attention not only to the unfathomable carnage but also to the responsibilities and obligations of our political officials to exercise their duty to end the violence. In Canada, our leaders ostensibly promote a ‘feminist foreign policy’, and while our political capital has been built on upholding rule-of-law ordering and liberal multilateralism, our elected officials have too often failed to act or have delayed actions until thousands more lives have been taken. Embarrassing abstentions at the United Nations General Assembly, inexcusable delays in demanding a ceasefire, failure to halt arms transfers, suffocation of dissent through abuses of authority by those in uniform across the country, villainizing the thousands upon thousands who have marched to demand a cessation of these massacres every weekend for almost a year have resulted in a failing of and to Canadians. These are also an immoral betrayal of Palestinians and of humanity.

This collection is a collaborative effort by the Palestine Working Group of the Women, Peace and Security Network-Canada (WPSN-C). It is an attempt to unite and raise our voices to say no more to violence. Silenced and disregarded in usual forums, we take this space to demand accountability and insist on peace.
