Please donate to help Tamara get to Ottawa for panel event, protests & meetings against NATO’s 5% GDP target for higher military spending and weapons production Mar 2-6

Our member, Tamara Lorincz, will be in Ottawa from Monday, March 2 to Friday, March 6 to speak on a panel, protest the big NATO military conference “The Road to 5% GDP”, and meet with Members of Parliament about the dangerous new defence industrial strategy and the dramatic rise of military spending. Tamara will be renting a car to take all the banners, printing leaflets, and contributing to the room rental costs.

If you can donate, please e-transfer Tamara directly: tlorincz@dal.ca

Please donate to VOW’s campaign to Cut Military Spending

The Liberal government has just launched the country's first Defence Industrial Strategy (DIS) that will ramp up military spending, weapons production, and arms exports. Canada is set to increase military spending to $150 billion/year by 2025 to reach the NATO 5% GDP target, but this will lead to greater poverty and climate breakdown. VOW opposes the federal government's plan for a warfare economy; and calls for Canada to have a green, care economy!

Read the new Defence Industrial Strategy: https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/corporate/reports-publications/industrial-strategy/security-sovereignty-prosperity.html

VOW just got new banners "Cut Military Spending: Let's Fund a Care Economy, Climate Action & Indigenous Reconciliation" and we are building a national campaign to raise awareness about risks of higher military spending and to stop it.

Please contact your Member of Parliament and let them know you oppose the Defence Industrial Strategy and the increase to military spending: https://www.ourcommons.ca/Members/en

If you can make a donation, please e-transfer: accounting@vowpeace.org

VOW members meet in Ottawa for dinner & to build peace

VOW members met in Ottawa for dinner at the Palestinian restaurant, Jericho, and then had a peace strategy meeting. They also held actions outside of the office of the Minister of Defence David McGuinty to say “cut military spending.” VOW was also represented at the roundtable “Future-Proofing the Women, Peace & Security Agenda” organized by the Women, Peace & Security Network-Canada, and attended the “Holding the Line on International Aid and Development” panel and reception organized by Oxfam.

VOW stood in solidarity for the National Day of Action for Cuba and sent letter to Prime Minister

Joint Letter

VOW and WILPF-Canada sent a joint letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand to call on them to send urgently needed fuel and supplies to Cuba. We stood in solidarity  with the Canada Network on Cuba for the National Day of Action for Cuba on February 21. Rallies took place across the country. We denounce the Trump administration’s cruel and illegal blockade against the suffering Cuban people. Canada is a friend of Cuba and should provide immediate aid to the island and denounce the U.S.’s sanctions and siege. Read our letter here.

VOW Participated in GAC Consultations on Canada's Review on International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)

Canada's implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) is being reviewed by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on March 3 and 4. VOW participated in the Global Affairs Canada's civil society consultation on the ICCPR in early February. We said that Canada's increased military spending, arms exports, and complicity in war and genocide prevented Canada from fully implementing civil and political rights at home and abroad. VOW and WILPF-Canada sent joint letter on Nuclear Disarmament to Prime Minister

Joint Letter

VOW and WILPF-Canada have sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand to urge them to show leadership on nuclear disarmament. We reminded them that Canada must fulfill its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). The 11th Review Conference of the Parties will take place at the United Nations in New York this April. We call on the federal government to send a strong delegation with civil society experts and take meaningful steps to implement Article 6 of the NPT to “pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament.”

Standing in Solidarity with, and in Support of, Rana Zaman

Send a Letter

The YMCA of Greater Halifax/Dartmouth awarded justice activist Ms. Rana Zaman their 2025 Peace Medal for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, only to revoke it days later under pressure from Zionist lobby groups like B'nai Brith Canada. These groups defend Israel's war crimes, genocide, and ethnic cleansing against Palestinian civilians in Gaza and beyond. This betrayal exposes the YMCA's hypocrisy on human rights, prioritizing funding over justice.

Ms. Zaman stands for true peace amid oppression. The YMCA must reject lobbyist influence and uphold its values.

Send this letter to YMCA leadership now—personalize it and demand action!

Making the Abolition of War a Realistic Goal

📍 HYBRID: Zoom | Friends House-60 Lowther Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, ON M5R 1C7

45 years ago, Gene Sharp contended, in this award-winning article, that war can realistically be abolished - if societies prepare for a credible, civilian-based nonviolent defense system capable of deterring and defeating aggression. Today, however, we are no closer to the abolition of war than in 1980. Is Sharp’s notion of civilian-based defence defective? Can we modify Sharp’s approach to make this abolition a realistic goal?

Exposing the U.S. Loophole: How Canadian F-35 Parts and Explosives Reach Israel

Email Your MP

For the first time, this report exposes a pipeline of military goods flowing from Canada to Israel via the U.S., facilitated by a deadly loophole in Canadian law. The hundreds of documented shipments of explosives and aircraft parts – from Canadian factories and through Canadian ports – contain vital components of both Israel’s F-35 fighter jets and the bombs they are dropping on Gaza.

Our damning new report uncovers ongoing shipments containing vital components of both Israel’s fighter jets and the bombs they are still dropping on Gaza:

  • 150 shipments of Canadian explosives and flammable materials sent from General Dynamics facilities in Québec to the U.S. Army Ammunition Plants making 2,000-pound bombs, 155mm shells, and tank rounds for Israel.
  • Hundreds more shipments of Canadian aircraft parts to Lockheed’s assembly line in Texas to build every F-35 jet for Israel.

Send this report to your MP and demand they vote yes on the No More Loopholes Bill and cut off the flow of weapons to Israel.

We have a moral and legal responsibility as a country to prevent genocide.
Yet Canada continues to arm Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Our leaders refuse to see, hear or even speak about what’s happening. But we’re not going to let them ignore it.

It’s time to call it what it is. Genocide.

Israel has killed over 50,000 Palestinians in the last 18 months—including 20,000 children. Our country is complicit in these ongoing deaths by buying and selling military goods and technology with Israel. Canada is even profiting off these murders.

Ask Canada to support peacebuilding

Send a Letter

In Canadian government policy and practice, the default response to conflict is usually military intervention. However, MCC’s local partners point out that foreign military interventions often exacerbate conflict and division, rather than contribute to long-lasting peace. Even when the military is not involved, peacebuilding is often overlooked as a preventative tool to reduce conditions for violent conflicts.

Based on the work of our partners, MCC believes that non-violent local peacebuilding needs to be a key pillar of Canada’s foreign policy, coming alongside both development and humanitarian actions, and as an alternative to foreign military interventions.

Manifesto: No to Global NATO – Yes to Common Security

Sign Up to Join the Call

NATO is an increasing obstacle to achieving world peace. It is no longer an organization confined to the North Atlantic: it is the world's largest military alliance, with allies and partners in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Since the end of the Cold War, NATO has reinvented itself as a tool for military action, psychological warfare, worldwide military and political interventions, and accessing resources and markets; it often claims to undertake these actions on behalf of the "international community". With its partnerships and joint operations, it is a vehicle for the US strategic goal of global dominance; reinforced by military bases on all continents, it bypasses the United Nations and the system of international law, accelerating militarization, escalating arms expenditures and fueling arms races.

We call on all peoples to join the fight against Global NATO, to build on our vision of peace, and to resist the dangerous militarization of our societies.

Shut Down the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association (CANA)!

Send a Letter

NATO interventions have led to failed states, environmental and climate damage, violence against women, and humanity’s largest refugee crisis. NATO allies have wasted trillions on wars and carbon-intensive weapons, enriching the (mainly US) arms industry while exacerbating conflict around the world. To conduct imperialist wars, occupations, covert and overt military operations and crippling sanctions, NATO is the tool that imperialist countries use to manage their war-mongering division of labour.

Rather than re-forming a new CANA, as required following the recent federal election, the Canada-Wide Peace and Justice Network, calls for shutting down the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association altogether, and for Canada to withdraw from NATO.

Cancel F35 contract. Canada shouldn’t spend billions on US fighter jets

Petition

Amidst Trump's economic siege and annexationist threats, it is unacceptable Canada is paying a US military giant $19 billion for 88 F-35s. Lockheed Martin’s fighter jet was chosen in part so the Canadian air force can better assist their US counterparts in offensive global operations. The US controls the F-35 source code and upgrades, giving Washington an effective “kill switch” on Canada’s fighter jets. Days of Significance

International Women's Day

2026 Theme: Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls

Sunday, March 8th, 2026

International Women’s Day comes ahead of the United Nations 70th Commission on the Status of Women, which will focus on progress against the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on the priority theme of access to justice. This covers “ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, including by promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, policies, and practices, and addressing structural barriers.”

For us at the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, this global conversation is deeply connected to our work. Peace cannot exist without justice — and justice cannot be realized while women and gender-diverse people continue to face systemic barriers, discrimination, and violence.

This is why we gather each year for our Peace Awards Gala, to both celebrate and recognize women and gender-diverse peacebuilders across Canada. Celebration is not separate from struggle; it is an act of resistance and affirmation. By uplifting their leadership and contributions, we honour the courage it takes to build peace — and recommit ourselves to a more just and equitable world.

Conference on the Status of Women (CSW) United Nations NY

Priority theme:
Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, including by promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, policies, and practices, and addressing structural barriers

March 9th-20th, 2026

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality, the rights and the empowerment of women. A functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), it was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946.

The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s and girls' rights, documenting the reality of their lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

During the Commission’s annual two-week session, representatives of UN Member States, civil society organizations and UN entities gather at UN headquarters in New York. They discuss progress and gaps in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the key global policy document on gender equality, and the 23rd special session of the General Assembly held in 2000 (Beijing+5), as well as emerging issues that affect gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. Member States agree on further actions to accelerate progress and promote women’s and girls' enjoyment of their rights in political, economic, and social fields. The outcomes and recommendations of each session are forwarded to ECOSOC for follow-up.

World Water Day

Theme: Water & Gender

March 22nd, 2026

World Water Day 2026 is all about how water and gender equality are deeply interconnected. Without safe water, sanitation and hygiene close to home, women and girls bear a heavier burden than men and boys. They collect and manage water. They care for people made sick by unsafe water. They lose time, health, safety, and opportunities. And, they are often left out of decision-making. This makes the global water crisis a women’s crisis. It’s time to centre women and girls in water solutions – not only as users, but as leaders, engineers, farmers, scientists, caregivers and changemakers.

When women and girls have equal voice in water decisions, services become more inclusive, sustainable and effective. We must invest in women’s leadership to make water a force for a healthier, more prosperous, gender-equal future that will benefit us all.
