War On Gaza-Updates
*Scroll down for March Events & Actions*
War on Gaza-Sign on Letter
The war on Gaza continues. The International Court of Justice concluded that Israel is plausibly committing genocide. This charge will be pursued. In the meantime the ICJ called for interim provisional measures to ensure that genocidal acts are prevented and that aid is delivered. In the days that followed hundreds more Palestinians have been killed and injured. There has not been a ceasefire, which would stop the bombing and be the best chance for both releasing the hostages and releasing Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Right now, everyone in Gaza is being held hostage in a horrific war that has killed or injured 5% of the population and destroyed 60% of the country's buildings and infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and universities.

Canadian Voice of Women for Peace calls on Canada to stop sending arms to Israel, to restore funding to UNRWA and for steps to be taken for a just resolution.

Revolution Until Victory
Film Screening
🗓️ March 3rd, 1pm

Drawing from Palestinian struggle cinema, Off Frame AKA Revolution Until Victory (2015), traces fragments of revolution, interlacing images of and dreams for freedom. This experimental documentary from Kuwait-born, Gaza-raised Mohanad Yaqubi tells the stories of a people who have been resisting their oppression for millennia. The film offers a bridge between the past and the present, from the river to the sea. Paralleling Third Cinema, the Palestine Film Unit was established as part of the PLO in the 1960s.

Hands off Rafah
Protest
🗓️ Sunday, March 3rd, 2024 @ 1 PM
📍 US Consulate, 360 University Ave, Toronto, ON

Gaza is facing starvation, its hospitals are besieged, threats of ground invasion in Rafah loom near, and Israel continues to unleash its onslaught on the over 2 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The mass movement for Palestine has led to the isolation of the US and Israel on the world stage, and all of their collaborators, including Canada. Our mobilization in this moment must be more decisive than ever, and we must show our full strength now to ensure a lasting ceasefire and an end to the siege on Gaza.

We call on everyone in Toronto to respond to this global call for action and join us to demand:
- An Arms embargo on Israel
- Reinstating funding to UNRWA
- Lifting the siege, and ending the Israeli occupation

The Legality of the Israeli Occupation

This study examines two central questions. First, it asks whether Israel’s de facto and de jure annexation measures, continued settlement and protracted occupation of the Palestinian territory – the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip – render the occupation illegal under international law. Second, the study examines the question raised by the implications arising from a finding of illegal occupation. If an occupation can become illegal, what would be the legal consequences that arise for all States and the United Nations, considering, inter alia, the rules and principles of international law, including, but not limited to, the Charter of the United Nations; the Fourth Geneva Convention; international human rights law; relevant Security Council, General Assembly and Human Rights Council resolutions; and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice of 9 July 2004.

Israel's War on Gaza is not a Valid Act of Self-Defence in International Law

Israel’s 1967 war was illegal as a matter of the international law on the use of force, the jus ad bellum—even, for the sake of argument, assuming the contested matter of Israel’s claim that it feared an attack from its three neighbours, states cannot lawfully use force in self-defence pre-emptively. Moreover, even if it had been lawful on this basis, the justification ended with Israel’s defeat of the three states. The standard justificatory requirements of the ad bellum test continue to apply to the occupation as itself a continuation of the use of force, and the test would not be met. Either way, then, Israel’s use of force through the occupation with respect to the Gaza Strip and the West Bank has been illegal since 1967.

How Civil Society Stops War
Ploughshares Calgary Society
Webinar
Wednesday, March 13, 2024
7:00pm MT/ 9:00pm ET

Join Author/Activist Rivera Sun for: People Power Peace: How Civil Society Stops War, a virtual talk on how everyday people have halted and prevented violent conflicts around the world. Contrary to common view, wars are not always won or prevented by military or even diplomacy. Sometimes, determined and passionate societies halt them - or keep them from breaking out in the first place. Rivera will share stories from around the world, some better known - like the Women of Liberia Mass Action For Peace - others less well known, but equally powerful. She will also lift up moments amidst broader struggles where nonviolent action kept armed factions from descending into civil war. Rivera has rolled up her sleeves and carried out systematic research collecting stories from every continent on the history of nonviolent strategies challenging war. The result is a compelling presentation that offers a powerful and comprehensive picture on how everyday people have stopped war. This talk will be interactive, with lots of time for Q&A.

RADIOACTIVE:
The Women of Three Mile Island
Film Screening
March 28th, 2024
7:00pm ET
Montreal for a World BEYOND War is pleased to invite you to the screening of Radioactive: The Women of Three Mile Island, at Cinema du Parc Montreal, on March 28th 2024.

We have chosen to screen this new documentary, a first in Montreal, because it so compellingly examines nuclear energy through the intersectional lenses of Environmental justice; Peace activism; and Feminism and reproductive rights. The film tells the story of the meltdown of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor, and the women who were affected by it and who struggled to bring the truth to light. Here in Quebec, this film is required viewing in light of the COP28 announcement about tripling nuclear production, and the threat of the re-opening of Gentilly II nuclear reactor.

Please note that this is a US-made film that is unfortunately available only in English (VOA).

The film will be screening in Montreal for one day only! So, please consider getting your tickets ASAP to attend on March 28th at 7 pm. There will be a Q&A discussion after the film, at 8:30, and the film's Director Heidi Hutner will participate by Zoom.

Montreal for a World BEYOND War invites representatives of environment, peace or feminist groups to reach out if they would like to co-host this event!

A call for Canada to enable humanitarian aid into Gaza
Canadian Foreign Policy Institute

Don't let Gaza starve. Take Action.

On top of the 30 000 who have been killed directly by Israeli forces, Palestinians are increasingly perishing from starvation.

On February 29 more than 100 people were massacred by Israeli forces and at least 700 others wounded in northern Gaza as they waited for food aid to be delivered.

If Israel continues to block food from entering Gaza far more will die from hunger and related diseases.

Egypt, Jordan and France have already sought to bypass Israel’s blockade by airdropping assistance.

Please take a minute to answer the call from Palestinians to the international community to enable humanitarian aid to reach northern Gaza by emailing Canadian international development minister Ahmed Hussen and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

International Women's Day 2024:
Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress
March 8th, 2024

Ensuring women’s and girls’ rights across all aspects of life is the only way to secure prosperous and just economies, and a healthy planet for future generations.

One of the key challenges in achieving gender equality by 2030 is an alarming lack of financing with a staggering USD 360 billion annual deficit in spending on gender-equality measures.

The time for change is now! Join us on 8 March 2024 for International Women’s Day as we rally behind the call to “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”.

Take a stand and join the conversation with the #InvestInWomen hashtag. Here are five key areas that need our joint action to ensure women are not left behind:

Investing in women: A human rights issue

Time is running out. Gender equality remains the greatest human rights challenge. Investing in women is a human rights imperative and cornerstone for building inclusive societies. Progress for women benefits us all.

Ending poverty

The COVID pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, climate disasters, and economic turmoil have pushed an extra 75 million people into severe poverty, since 2020. This could lead to more than 342 million women and girls living below the poverty line by 2030, making immediate action crucial.

Implementing gender-responsive financing

Due to conflicts and rising fuel and food prices, recent estimates suggest that 75 per cent of countries will curb public spending by 2025. Austerity negatively impacts women and crowds out public spending on essential public services and social protection.

Shifting to a green economy and care society

The current economic system exacerbates poverty, inequality, and environmental degradation, disproportionately affecting women and marginalized groups. Advocates for alternative economic models propose a shift towards a green economy and care society that amplifies women’s voices.

Supporting feminist change-makers

Feminist organizations are leading efforts to tackle women’s poverty and inequality. However, they are running on empty, receiving a meagre 0.13 per cent of total official development assistance.

Commission on the Status of Women
March 11th-22nd, 2024

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. A functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), it was established by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) of 21 June 1946.

The CSW is instrumental in promoting women’s rights, documenting the reality of women’s lives throughout the world, and shaping global standards on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

------------------------------------------------

The sixty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place from 11 to 22 March 2024.

Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are invited to contribute to the session.

  • Priority theme: Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective

Brigid Grant

The VOW chapter in Fredericton was founded in 1967 by Norah Toole and Kay Bedell. Norah had been involved with Voice of Women for Peace at the national level starting in 1960, continuing an interest in peace and community service begun in the 1940s with a women’s study group on international affairs and this became the Fredericton Council of Women. Norah also cofounded, in 1946, with Marion Gabriel, the Indian-non-Indian Goodwill Association. In 1984 Norah was awarded the Governor General's Persons award for her work for women's rights and for peace. She was an active member of VOW until her death in 1990.

Brigid Grant, Norah's daughter, joined the Fredericton Chapter at its inception, and went on to become a member of the National Board, until her death in 2023. Brigid, over many years, worked for peace as an advocate and artist as well an activist, including volunteering as an observer witness to the conflict between the Canadian Department of Fisheries and local Indigenous fishers at EsgenoĂ´petitj (Burnt Church). In 2005 she was awarded the Fredericton YMCA Peace Medallion, a now national program of awards which was first awarded in Fredericton, inspired by Jim and Kay Bedell, who walked from New Brunswick to New York to raise awareness of the 1982 United Nations Disarmament Conference.

A donation to honour both Norah and Brigid has been given to VOW National. Many other Fredericton women were active in the organization, but for a long time, the Grant-Toole house on George Street was the “nerve” centre of the organization.

A retrospective show of Brigid's art will be up at the University of New Brunswick Fredericton art centre galleries from May 3 to June 13th, 2024, and a celebration of her life will happen on May 22nd in the auditorium of the same building (Memorial Hall).

Alleson Kase
Alleson Kase January 10, 1953 – December 11, 2023

Alleson departed on her final journey into the great mystery on December 11, 2023. Her guiding principle was to live simply so that others may simply live. In doing that, she also led a very rich life that left footprints around the world.

Wherever she went, she tried to connect with the local culture and people, always preferring to shop at local markets or slip into an eatery that looked the least likely to cater to tourists. In her work with TAMMACHAT Natural Textiles (http://www.tammachat.com/), the fair trade textile business that she ran with her beloved Ellen, the two sat for hours with the women of the weaving co-ops, chatting and learning about their lives and what mattered to them.

Alleson was relentlessly curious and thoughtful about a wide variety of issues. Her social justice work landed her in protest marches as well as national television appearances, where she advocated for peace, women's equality and lesbian rights. She wrote pamphlets and poetry, speeches and impact assessment reports. She mentored young social changemakers and quietly supported causes that mattered to her around the globe. Alleson was a VOW member for the past 13 years, and she will be remembered for her continuous care to make the world a more just and peaceful place for everyone.
