Stop the Genocide in Gaza-Sign on Letter
Good news!  Canada has confirmed it will resume aid to UNRWA
and has voted to stop arms shipments to Israel.  This motion was brought by the NDP and was amended in major ways, then supported
by the Liberals and Bloc Quebecois as well as the NDP and Greens.
The original motion was much stronger.  Nonetheless this is a new commitment from Canada and one we asked for in our petition to Trudeau, Melanie Joly, and Ahmed Hussen.
Find more information on the original motion and the changes at this link.

However Israel is not complying with the orders of the International Court of Justice to stop engaging in genocidal acts - so Canada must take action.

We now have a new VOW petition! Please sign and share!

We call on Canada to:
1) Ensure that weapons shipments to Israel are halted immediately. This must include ending the "transfer" of weapons and components already ordered as well as reaching Israel from Canada via the US.

2) join the case at the International Court of Justice brought by S. Africa, and now supported by Ireland, against genocide.

3)
Initiate a further meeting of the Security Council, aiming to pass a resolution which would set effective sanctions on Israel

Gaza Hunger Strike

Canadians are STILL hunger striking for an arms embargo on Israel

The Canadian government says they will stop approving arms exports to Israel, but existing permits continue unabated. This means that Canada continues to arm Israel.

Canadians are on a rotating hunger strike. This means that every single day, numerous Canadians from coast to coast will be on a hunger strike.

While a genocide of the Palestinian people is being committed by the state of Israel, Canadians won't stop hunger striking until our representatives enforce a FULL arms embargo.

To date  1,348 people have participated in more than 6,803 hunger strike days.  There are hunger strikers in ALL provinces and territories.

You can sign up to participate at:
https://gazastarving.com

This is a rotating fast.
We also invite you to support the McGill hunger strikers.

We Got the Canadian Government to Commit to Stop Approving Arms Exports!
By Rachel Small, World BEYOND War, March 21, 2024

While the Canadian government is promising to stop approving any more arms permits to Israel, they have not committed to actually stopping the transport of arms for those permits that have previously been approved. Any suspension that excludes the record-breaking number of arms approvals for Israel that our government pushed through in October-December makes a mockery of our collective demand for an arms embargo.

This progress would never have happened without the powerful and escalating grassroots organizing across the country demanding an arms embargo. But this is not the time to declare victory and move on — quite the opposite.

It is a critical moment to ramp up the pressure in order to make this real and actually stop the flow of all military goods to and from Israel. Take action today!

Write to the CEOs of five major public pension plans that are investing in Israeli war crimes

Take a minute to write to the CEOs of five major public pension plans that are investing in Israeli war crimes.

Five public sector pensions, one in BC and four in Ontario have almost a quarter of a billion dollars invested in companies that the UN has indicated are complicit with supporting illegal Israeli settlements (war crimes) and over $2 billion in total invested in companies complicit with war crimes and arming Israel.

These combine with more than $22B of investments by the CPPIB and CDPQ in companies complicit with war crimes, occupation, arming Israel, and perhaps genocide. Together this is about $24 billion of investments that are complicit with supporting war crimes and support for the arming of Israel.

All except OMERS are invested in companies deemed by the UN to be complicit with supporting illegal settlements.

In all cases they are support arms manufacturers/surveillance companies,  and companies complicit with Israeli war crimes, and perhaps even genocide.

Canada's inaction in Gaza marks a failure of its feminist foreign policy
Article
Authors: Mayme Lefurgey & Jacqueline Potvin

Launched in 2017, the policy stated that Canada would take an explicitly feminist approach to international assistance, including a commitment to protecting women’s sexual and reproductive rights. Many considered it to be a forward-thinking policy that builds on the past work of NGOs and other international partners.

However, the policy also revealed shortcomings. It was criticized for its fuzzy definition of feminism, its surface-level engagement with the overlapping forms of inequality women actually face and for its neoliberal approach to feminism that seeks to fix problems within the Global South, with little engagement with how these problems arose in the first place.

And now, as Israel’s offensive on Gaza marches on unabated and the civilian death toll mounts, Canada’s tepid response calls the strength and sincerity of its feminist commitments into doubt. Furthermore, the country’s continued sale of military equipment to Israel suggests where Canada’s stated feminist values conflict with other political interests leaving Palestinians by the wayside.

As the US moves ahead with $3 billion sale of F-35s to Israel, Canada continues to supply key parts for these bombers

Canadian components in F-35s

Kelsey Gallagher of Project Ploughshares has noted in his Fanning the Flames report that at least 110 Canadian-based suppliers have been awarded contracts for the F-35 program and that a study commissioned by Lockheed Martin in 2018 says there are US$2.3-million worth of Canadian components in every F-35 fighter jet.

What are some of those components?

In April 2022, the CBC reported: “More than 100 years after shipyard workers in Lunenburg, N.S., shaped wood and metal to build the Bluenose schooner, the tradition of local, hand-built excellence lives on. But now, instead of fishing boats, it’s fighter jets.”

That article further notes that the Toulouse, France-based Stelia Aerospace facility in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia has been contracted to, for example, build shims to help open and close the weapons bay doors of F-35s sold to other countries.

VOW in Ottawa

At the end of February, VOW senior researcher Tamara Lorincz met with VOW members in Ottawa and did a number of actions and events. She spoke at an event on "Women, War, Peace & Climate Justice" for International Women's Day. VOW members stood in solidarity with Palestinian families who are trying to bring their loved ones to Canada from Gaza and with members of the Algonquin First Nation who are opposed to nuclear waste being stored near their community. Tamara also joined an early morning rally for Gaza. VOW members participated in the demonstration for Haiti on Parliament Hill and the evening panel to mark the 20th anniversary of the coup in Haiti that Canada, France and the United States orchestrated. Haiti remains in political crisis ever since. VOW members also had a meeting at the Embassy of Mexico to discuss collaboration on disarmament and peace. VOW is very impressed that "Mexico's Foreign Ministry "prioritizes nuclear disarmament on its international agenda" and that "Mexico's diplomacy will continue to work for a safer and more peaceful world based on international law and cooperation among nations, not on weapons." Canada should follow Mexico's lead and implement a foreign policy that is based on peace and cooperation not on weapons. Tamara also participated in a strategy meeting to plan the On to Ottawa Peace Caravan and the protest against the CANSEC arms show in the capital. "Speaking of Genocide: The Holocaust, Israel-Palestine, and the War in Gaza since the October 7 attack"
In-Person/Virtual Event
Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024
7:00PM ET

In-Person:
University College (UC)
Room: Conron Hall
Online via Zoom

Presented by Omer Bartov, genocide historian, Samuel Pisar Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University.

This lecture examines the immediate, as well as the deeper roots of the crisis in Israel and Gaza. It also calls for dispelling some of the false analogies that have only led to obfuscation by all parties involved. It suggests that only a clear and dispassionate analysis might help us emerge from the turmoil. Sketching a potential resolution of the crisis in no way assures us that the parties involved will grasp it, but it can provide a horizon of hope and opportunity that disrupts the grim logic of the current mayhem.

A call for Canada to enable humanitarian aid into Gaza
Canadian Foreign Policy Institute

Don't let Gaza starve. Take Action.

On top of the 30 000 who have been killed directly by Israeli forces, Palestinians are increasingly perishing from starvation.

On February 29 more than 100 people were massacred by Israeli forces and at least 700 others wounded in northern Gaza as they waited for food aid to be delivered.

If Israel continues to block food from entering Gaza far more will die from hunger and related diseases.

Egypt, Jordan and France have already sought to bypass Israel’s blockade by airdropping assistance.

Please take a minute to answer the call from Palestinians to the international community to enable humanitarian aid to reach northern Gaza by emailing Canadian international development minister Ahmed Hussen and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

  • Scientific assessments underline the urgent need to address the intersecting crises of climate change, biodiversity breakdown, pollution, and resource depletion;
  • The most severe, widespread, and long-term forms of environmental damage (ecocide), which contribute to these crises, are not recognized as a crime under existing international laws;
  • Amending the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to include ecocide as a crime, alongside genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression, could provide a simple, effective deterrent for corporate and government decision-makers from causing intentional or negligent environmental destruction.

Days of Significance
Global Day of Action Against Military Spending (GDAMS)
April 12th-May 15th

In December 2014, the International Peace Bureau (IPB) announced the launch of a permanent, global, year-round campaign to tackle the worldwide issue of excessive military spending.

PB has for several years called for annual reallocations of (as a minimum) 10% from the military budgets of all states; and for a process to be started to reduce arms production as well as the international weapons trade.

IPB’s concept of the 5 Directions would mean that money released from the military budget could be made available to 5 broad alternative areas:

1.      Peace: disarmament, conflict prevention and resolution, human security;
2.      Sustainable development and anti-poverty programmes;
3.      Climate change and biodiversity loss – for mitigation and adaptation;
4.      Public services/social justice, human rights, gender equality and green job-creation;
5.      Humanitarian programmes to support the most vulnerable groups.

These are all part of a wider global transformation towards a culture of peace.

Even these days, we are still trying to get back on track from COVID-19, a worldwide health pandemic linked to the health of our ecosystem.

For this International Mother Earth Day, let's remimd ourselves - more than ever - that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth.
