Climate Action Statement on Gaza
Climate Action Network International

As a member of the Climate Action Network International, VOW has agreed to and finalized a statement on Gaza that expresses our condemnation of Israel's invasion of Rafah and calls for actions to be taken.

"There is no climate justice without human rights.

Nowhere is safe in Gaza. Rafah is now under attack despite all of the warnings to Israel to not invade, from the UN, its agencies, governments and civil society across the world.

Since the Israeli invasion of Rafah, hundreds more civilians have been killed, mainly women and children. This brings the total number of Palestinian deaths to over 35,000 so far, while the majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have had to flee their homes.

Palestinians are facing a complete blockade, famine, disease, forced evacuations and destruction of all infrastructure.

We will not be silent in the face of an unfolding genocide."

Solidarity with the Students

Students in Montreal, Vancouver, Waterloo, Toronto and Ottawa have launched encampments and ongoing sit-ins on their university campuses, joining a growing global student movement in solidarity with Gaza (where there are NO remaining universities) and demanding their institutions disclose the full list of the university’s investments and financial and academic ties, and divest from the companies enabling Israel’s genocidal war crimes.

For the last six months, a powerful and growing movement across the country has demanded an end to Canadian complicity in Israeli military violence, including an immediate and real arms embargo on Israel. Students are taking a brave and important stand right now to push these demands forward, and we all need to show up in solidarity with them.

Here’s How to Support

Show Up!

All of these campus actions are welcoming community members to come in person to support. Check out their donation requests, community guidelines, political demands, and head down to your local encampment today.

Demand Israel stop escalating violence that could spur World War III
Petition

Canadian officials immediately condemned Iran for launching missiles towards Israel, but they ignored Israel’s brazen war crime that elicited Iran’s reaction. In so doing, they are enabling Israel to escalate its violence on Iran and the region, which could spur a global conflict.

Take a minute to email Justin Trudeau, Melanie Joly and Jagmeet Singh to demand they condemn Israel’s violence and reduce direct Canadian complicity with the Israeli military.

WALKING TOGETHER FOR PEACE -
PUGWASH TO HALIFAX
September 8th - 21st, 2024
This is your invitation to participate in and/or support a peace walk from Pugwash to Halifax in September 2024.

'Walking Together for Peace' will build on Canada's history of support for disarmament with a call for Canada to join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. THE TPNW was passed by the UN in 2017 and ratified in 2021 https://disarmament.unoda.org/wmd/nuclear/tpnw/#: but Canada has not signed.

VOW member Setsuko Thurlow received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 for her contribution to the ICANW campaign. There are currently 93 signatories to the treaty - but Canada is not one of them. https://www.icanw.org/the_treaty

Setsuko has worked with VOW and IPPNW-C on our Disarmament Education Project for high school students. Nuclear weapons have become an increasing threat with the 'Doomsday Clock' set by scientists now set at 90 seconds to midnight. (https://thebulletin.org/2024/01/press-release-doomsday-clock-remains-at-90-seconds-to-midnight/). Let's change this by joining this international initiative.
This walk will call us to develop a culture of peace that will give us hope for the future as we move from militarism to common security, building community and peace for people and the planet.

A VOW committee convened by Jill Carr-Harris, Kathrin Winkler, Linda Kalafatides, Jane Watson, and Lyn Adamson are planning the walk which will include workshops on disarmament education and events in Halifax on the International Day of Peace on September 21.

The walk is supported by VOW and by Science for Peace. Several walkers from India will join us. For more information and to inquire about participating (for all or part) please be in touch with lyn.adamson9@gmail.com

Pugwash Nova Scotia is famous for hosting the 1957 (and later) scientific conferences. Founded by Joseph Rotblat and Bertrand Russell, these conferences brought together scientists from the US, Soviet Union, Japan, the UK, Canada and five other
countries.

Mothers' Day for Peace Dinner

The Peace Awards event, held on May 11th at Friends House in Toronto, was an incredible space created to honour women in peace!

Peace award recipients joined us from across Canada, both in person and through their heartfelt speeches. The evening featured a delicious catered meal, a successful silent auction that raised funds for VOW's important initiatives, and a chance to honour the incredible work of our peace award recipients. We were especially grateful for our keynote speaker, Kim Phuc, whose inspiring address added a profound and meaningful touch to the event.

Thank you to everyone for your unwavering support and contribution to this special evening!

On to Ottawa Peace Caravan

From May 25 – 29, several members of Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace joined the “On to Ottawa Peace Caravan 2024.” The Caravan was co-sponsored by Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and national VOW.  The theme was DEMILITARIZE, DECARBONIZE, DECOLONIZE. Before and during our trip, peace activists held daily vigils in Halifax. Supported by our VOW chapter and additional contributions from individual members, as well as co-sponsorship from the Halifax Friends’ Meeting (Quakers), we held peace workshops in Amherst NS, Fredericton NB, and Montreal along the way.

We also stopped to lay a white poppy wreath and speak with local people in Quebec City. We showed the peace art we had created, sang peace songs, and shared information on military spending.

Once in Ottawa, we met with the Caravanners from the West Coast and shared stories and resources. We held a rally on Parliament Hill, posed with several statues in Ottawa, attended Question Period in the House of Commons, and participated in the STOP CANSEC rally at the entrance to the largest international weapons fair in Canada. Heavily attended by both protesters and police, the rally was a passionate statement against war and the profit motive of the suppliers of armaments. There was also a particular focus on the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Five protesters were arrested when they stepped over the line that the police had created.

VOW protests CANSEC, North America’s largest weapons fair, in Ottawa

Many VOW members from coast to coast came to protest CANSEC, North America’s largest weapons fair, at the EY Centre in Ottawa. The protest was organized by the No CANSEC coalition with lots of support from the International League of People’s Struggle, Palestine Solidarity, Raging Grannies and other groups. There was a heavy police presence but we stood firmly with our banners “Arms Dealers Not Welcome”, “Cut Military Spending”, and “Demilitarize Decarbonize: Stop the Wars, Stop the Warming.” VOW also participated in the big rally to demand a “National Arms Inquiry and an Arms Embargo against Israel” on Parliament Hill. Find out more about the protest and the media coverage here: https://worldbeyondwar.org/cansec/

VOW and WILPF raise public alarm about the planned militarization of the north

VOW and WILPF-Canada sent urgent letters to the Governor General Mary Simon and President of the Inuit Circumpolar Council about our concern that the Trudeau government and the Department of National Defence are planning a massive militarization of the Arctic region for NORAD and NATO. Placing new fighter jets, attack helicopters, warships, armed drones and military bases will cause adverse climate and environmental impacts. We need to make the Arctic a zone of peace, cooperate with all countries including Russia on the climate crisis and protect Indigenous peoples and Arctic wildlife. We also stood with our new banner outside of Parliament, the U.S. Embassy and Rideau Hall, the Governor General’s office.

Learn more about this serious problem by reading Tamara’s latest article “Canada’s hyper-militarization accelerates climate breakdown, threatens Indigenous communities” in the Global Network’s “Space Alert” Spring/Summer 2024 is here with lots of other critical pieces about war and militarism from around the world: https://space4peace.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Space-Alert_44.pdf

Sci-Fai Futures Youth Challenge
Youth4Disarmament Initiative

The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) and its Youth4Disarmament Initiative is launching the "Sci-fAI Futures Youth Challenge" today, calling on young people to share their vision of a fictional world in 2145 where artificial intelligence (AI) has been taken onboard by militaries around the world.

The creative, science-fiction challenge provides a platform to spark the interest and imagination of young people around how AI could be used in or to prevent armed conflicts, its potential interactions with other emerging technologies, and positive scenarios in which AI is leveraged for good in the military domain.

Young people worldwide between the ages of 13 and 29 are invited to submit a written or visual story envisioning how they see AI affecting international peace and security in 2145. Participants can submit their responses under one of three themes:

“Militarization: Destroying the Environment in Okinawa and the World”
Webinar
Thursday, June 13th, 2024
5:00pm-6:00pm ET

Speaker: Abby Martin and Hideki Yoshikawa

War and militarization are the Earth’s greatest enemies, and this remains especially true in Okinawa, Japan. The Battle of Okinawa during WWII decimated 200,000 human lives and destroyed much of the environment in the prefecture. The militarization of Okinawa, carried out by the U.S. occupation of Okinawa from 1945 to 1972, has created a dreadful situation: Okinawa, while accounting for only 0.6 percent of Japan’s land mass, bears approximately 70 percent of the land area used for U.S. military bases in Japan. As a consequence, the people of Okinawa have been forced to live with and fight against water and land contamination, unbearable noise from aircraft, the danger of aircraft crashes, and other forms of environmental destruction by the U.S. military. In this open press conference, Abby Martin, an American journalist and filmmaker known for her anti-war and anti-militarization documentaries, will introduce her film “The U.S. Military: Planet Earth’s Greatest Enemy” and provide an overview of how the U.S. military is destroying the Earth. Hideki Yoshikawa, an Okinawan scholar and activist, will explain how the Japanese and U.S. governments are destroying the environment of Henoko-Oura Bay in Okinawa, one of the areas richest in biodiversity in Japan, through the construction of an air base there, and how the people of Okinawa and the environment have fought back.

This webinar is free and open to the public. Participants all need to register. Register below!

This is an open press conference organized by Okinawa Interest Group, Peace Philosophy Centre, Okinawa Environmental Justice Project, and World BEYOND War for journalists, media personnel, and anyone interested in learning more about how the U.S. military presence in Okinawa affects the environment.

International Campaign for Nuclear Weapons Global Week of Action on Nuclear Spending
ICAN's Yearly Global Nuclear Weapons Spending Report Release: June 17, 2024

Every year, ICAN exposes the absurd amounts of money the 9 nuclear armed states spend on their arsenals ($82.9 billion last year). These numbers are not just a strong media hook, or a talking point for world leaders who want to make the case for better uses for this money - such as climate or education. They're also a call to action, or better yet a Global Week of Action on Nuclear Spending!

Our preparations for this year's week of action generated some exciting ideas and commitments from our partners around the world, but we also we also heard concerns about the June timing. We want this week to be as big and impactful as it can be. That is why, while we will still be releasing ICAN's yearly global nuclear weapons spending report on 17 June, we are postponing the Week of Action until September 16-22.

Nuclear weapons affect all of us, so it’s up to all of us to push back against the absurd sums of money wasted on nuclear weapons. And this week of action is an opportunity for all of us to speak out, together. There will be many different ways to get involved and take action. Click the button below to navigate through ICAN's resources and events, or RSVP to receive updates as they develop them.

Canadian companies and subsidiaries supply a wide range of components to Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jet program, from machined parts, fuselage sections, and electro-hydraulic actuation system components, to power & thermal management system controllers...
  • Companies that participate in the F-35 program include: Honeywell, Magellan Aerospace, Apex Industries, ASCO Aerospace Canada, Ben Machine Products, PCC Aerostructures Centra and others.
  • Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jets have become emblematic of the loophole that allows Canadian-made weapons components to be transferred, unregulated and unreported, to Israel via the U.S.

Foreign Affairs
Concerned citizens of Canada call upon the Government of Canada to end arms support to the State of Israel immediately.

What the Palestinian people are facing is nothing short of a major humanitarian crisis. The State of Israel has broken many international laws and by Canada sending arms to Israel they are directly cooperating in these crimes against humanity. As Canada is a member of the United Nations, it is their duty to ensure and uphold basic human rights to all.

We, as concerned tax paying citizens strongly condemn Canada's support of the apartheid regime and implore the Canadian government to stand for a ceasefire and allow aid for the Palestinian men, women and children.

Days of Significance
Pride Month- June 2024

As we celebrate Pride Month here in Canada, let's remember that Pride is not just a celebration of love and identity but also a powerful means of protest. The roots of Pride lie in the Stonewall Riots, a historic moment of resistance against police brutality and discrimination towards the LGBTQ+ community in the US. For Canadians, the Toronto raids lead to riots, which were significant, and turned into what is now seen as pride festivals across the country.

This spirit of protest resonates deeply with organizations like the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and other peace groups, who advocate tirelessly for equality and justice. Today, the fight for 2SLGBTQQIA+ rights intersects with broader struggles for peace and social justice.

It's vital to acknowledge the intersecting struggles faced by marginalized and racialized members of the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community, especially in the context of demilitarization and decolonization. Beyond battling discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, these individuals also contend with systemic racism and colonial legacies that perpetuate violence and inequality. Pride, rooted in protest and resistance, aligns with movements for demilitarization and decolonization. By addressing militarism and colonialism, we not only challenge structures of oppression but also pave the way for a more inclusive and just society where all individuals can thrive without fear of violence or discrimination. This Pride Month, let's stand in solidarity and commit ourselves to the ongoing fight for demilitarization, decolonization, and peace for all.

World Environment Day:
Accelerating land restoration, drought resilience and desertification progress
June 5th, 2024

The 2024 day is focusing on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. Such action and leadership are vital as we face a worrying intensification of the triple planetary crisis: the crisis of climate change, the crisis of nature and biodiversity loss, and the crisis of pollution and waste. This crisis is placing the world’s ecosystems under assault. Billions of hectares of land are degraded, affecting almost half of the world’s population and threatening half of global GDP. Rural communities, smallholder farmers and the extremely poor are hit hardest.

Restoration boosts livelihoods, lowers poverty and builds resilience to extreme weather. Restoration increases carbon storage and slows climate change.

International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict
June 19th, 2024

Every new wave of conflict brings with it a rising tide of human tragedy, including new waves of war’s oldest, most silenced, and least condemned crime - sexual violence. Conflict-related sexual violence, whether against women, girls, men, or boys in all their diversity, continues to be used as a tactic of war, torture, and terrorism amid deepening political and security crises, compounded by militarization and the illicit proliferation of arms.

On 19 June 2015, the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/69/293) proclaimed 19 June of each year the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, in order to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence, to honour the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world and to pay tribute to all those who have courageously devoted their lives to and lost their lives in standing up for the eradication of these crimes.

National Indigenous Peoples Month, and National Indigenous Peoples Day on
June 21st, 2024

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis. It's a time to honour the stories, achievements and resilience of Indigenous Peoples, who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to impact the evolving Canada.

For generations, many Indigenous groups and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on June 21 or around that time of year because of the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

Every year, numerous activities are organized across the country on June 21 to showcase the richness and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultural expressions and stories. Find an event or activity near you!

Each week throughout the month of June, we will be highlighting specific aspects of Indigenous history, cultures and perspectives. Explore learning resources on each theme:

  • June 1 to 9: Environment, traditional knowledge and territory
  • June 10 to 16: Children and youth
  • June 17 to 23: Languages, cultures and arts
  • June 24 to 30: Women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people

Take the first steps on your educational journey:

and gender-diverse people.

The agenda has evolved since the year 2000, when the United Nations Security Council passed resolution 1325, prompted by the increasingly complex and changing nature of conflict, emerging security threats, new technology, competition in the Arctic and outer space, and shifts in the geopolitical landscape.
