On August 6th, join us at the Toronto Peace Garden in Nathan Phillips Square for the 79th Anniversary Commemoration of the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To conclude, the evening will close with a moving lantern ceremony to honour the memories of those affected. WALKING TOGETHER FOR PEACE Initiative -
PUGWASH TO HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA
September 8th - 21st, 2024

Dear Friends,

You are invited to join Voice of Women for Peace, Science for Peace and Jai Jagat in a  grassroots initiative-Walking Together for Peace.

Walking Together for Peace will take place from September 8th to 21st, 2024. It is a 200 kilometer walk that will begin at Pugwash on the North Shore and conclude with people walking, driving and biking into Halifax. A core group of youth, women, peace, ecology activists along with several Gandhian “Peace Walkers” joining us from India will be walking the full length. We invite the public to join us as well for a few stops or a day to help support the cause. The participation will be local, national and international. It will focus on banning nuclear weapons and the positive impact that a complete ban will have on the environment and the climate. There will also be workshops on disarmament education and events in Halifax on the International Day of Peace on September 21.

As we walk through diverse communities we will learn from others, also walking the path to peace. Together we will explore the interconnected issues related to peace. Addressing rising temperatures, the threat of rising seas and wildfires includes climate justice. Understanding the burdens that deter us from healing the earth means to talk about militarization, colonization and racism. The overarching threat of nuclear weapons compels us to act. This is most important for youth in  facing this future.

If you are interested in joining and/or supporting our initiative, please visit our website to complete an interest form as an individual, or to engage as an organization! Click here. Join the movement and support creating a culture of peace!

'We are fundraising for Walking Together for Peace - donations are gratefully received and donations received by August 23rd will be doubled by a generous donor to help us raise $3000 to cover costs. Please e-transfer donations to accounting@vowpeace.org or donate via credit card at this link or by cheque to our mailing address-[Canadian Voice of Women for Peace: 60 Lowther Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, M5R 1C7]

According to the ICANS (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) report “Surge: 2023 Global Nuclear Weapons Spending“, the total nuclear weapons spending in the last five years was more than $387 billion. This is more than what the World Food Programme estimates it would take to end world hunger. Nuclear spending is only part of the annual global military spending of 2 trillion, 500 billion dollars.

We urge policy-makers to take concrete steps toward the reallocation of this massive budget for urgent climate, social, economic  and health care needs. We also call on Canada to support the abolition of nuclear weapons and to  sign onto the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). We  call on all nuclear weapon states to stop the production and sale of nuclear weapons immediately.

We hope to re-awaken the great courage of  scientists and peace activists who gathered at the National Historic site of Thinkers Lodge in 1957, beginning the transnational Pugwash movement for nuclear disarmament and world peace.

Let’s rebuild Canada’s identity as a peacebuilder firmly rooted on a path of reconciliation, reparation and reciprocity. Let’s walk and talk so we can begin to walk the talk together.

Sincerely,
Canadian Voice of Women for Peace

VOW and WILPF-Canada write to the Embassies of Hungary and China
Letters

VOW and WILPF-Canada have written and sent letters to the Embassy of Hungary and the Embassy of China to thank them for their “peace missions.” The Government of Hungary has called for a negotiations to end the war in Ukraine and has met with leaders. Hungary has also promoted peace at the European Union and at the United Nations Security Council. The Peoples’ Republic of China has also initiated a peace plan for Ukraine and has helped Palestinian factions resolve their differences and sign a unity agreement. This historic agreement will serve as a crucial basis for governance of a Palestinian state. We greatly appreciate the peace and mediation efforts by other countries.

International Swim with Gaza
Online Event
August 24th-25th, 2024

In these darkest times, people are finding joy any which way they can – dancing, singing, playing music and more.

Yet, Tareq Hajjaj, Gaza Correspondent for Mondoweiss writes, after relaying the relentless horrors he has to report, ‘Sadness looms over the hearts of the Palestinians in Gaza. It is slowly killing them and turning them into people who are losing hope little by little.’

We have implored, marched, demanded the War on Gaza to end, yet it continues. But it will end, and again the people in Gaza will descend on the beaches to swim, float and just hang about.

Our Swim With Gaza this year is to keep faith with the people of Gaza, that things can and will get better.

Demand Israel stop escalating violence that could spur World War III
Petition

Canadian officials immediately condemned Iran for launching missiles towards Israel, but they ignored Israel’s brazen war crime that elicited Iran’s reaction. In so doing, they are enabling Israel to escalate its violence on Iran and the region, which could spur a global conflict.

Take a minute to email Justin Trudeau, Melanie Joly and Jagmeet Singh to demand they condemn Israel’s violence and reduce direct Canadian complicity with the Israeli military.

Arms Embargo NOW
We’re coming together to demand the Canadian government impose a full, immediate arms embargo on Israel.

Canadian companies and subsidiaries supply a wide range of components to Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jet program, from machined parts, fuselage sections, and electro-hydraulic actuation system components, to power & thermal management system controllers...
  • Companies that participate in the F-35 program include: Honeywell, Magellan Aerospace, Apex Industries, ASCO Aerospace Canada, Ben Machine Products, PCC Aerostructures Centra and others.
  • Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jets have become emblematic of the loophole that allows Canadian-made weapons components to be transferred, unregulated and unreported, to Israel via the U.S.
  • Héroux-Devtek, headquartered in Quebec, contributes parts and landing gear to Boeing’s F-15 fighter jet  program. It’s among the Canadian companies that supply components for Boeing’s F-15s, which are used by the Israeli Air Force to bomb Gaza.
  • Canadian companies also supply parts for Boeing’s AH-64 Apache helicopters, which are also used by the Israeli Air Force.

No to NATO’s 2% GDP Target! Call on the Canadian government to cut military spending

NATO drives Canada’s rising military spending. In 2014, NATO allies pledged to increase their military spending to 2% of gross domestic product (GDP). According to NATO’s latest Defence Expenditures report, over the past ten years, Canada’s military spending has increased 100% from $20 billion in 2014 to over $40 billion this year, which is 1.4% of GDP. By 2030, Canada’s military spending will increase to $50 billion, which will be 1.7% of GDP. Military spending diverts crucial resources away from public needs putting more Canadians in poverty. Tell your Member of Parliament and the Prime Minister you don’t support NATO’s 2% GDP target, you want military spending cut for social and environmental needs and you want Canada out of NATO.

Foreign Affairs

Taxpayer-subsidized charitable donations may well be Canada’s most important contribution to Palestinian dispossession;

Over the last five years, more than a billion dollars has been sent by Canadian charities to Israeli recipients. While some of this money may find its way into charitable ventures, a portion goes toward supporting the Israeli military and/or illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, activities which stand in contravention of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) regulations and Canada’s public policy...

We, the undersigned, citizens or residents of Canada, call upon the Minister of National Revenue to:

1. Immediately investigate all Canadian charities providing funds to illegal Israeli settlement activity and/or the Israeli military;
2. Revoke the charitable status of all found to not be in compliance; and
3. Take concrete steps to prevent other organizations from engaging in such activities in the future.

Days of Significance
79th Anniversary of the Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki

Hiroshima Day:
August 6th
Nagasaki Day:
August 9th

The two atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945 killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of people, and their effects are still being felt today.

By the end of 1945, the bombing had killed an estimated 140,000 people in Hiroshima, and a further 74,000 in Nagasaki. In the years that followed, many of the survivors would face leukemia, cancer, or other terrible side effects from the radiation.

The uranium bomb detonated over Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 had an explosive yield equal to 15,000 tonnes of TNT. It razed and burnt around 70 per cent of all buildings and caused an estimated 140,000 deaths by the end of 1945, along with increased rates of cancer and chronic disease among the survivors.

A slightly larger plutonium bomb exploded over Nagasaki three days later levelled 6.7 sq km.  of the city and killed 74,000 people by the end of 1945.

It takes around 10 seconds for the fireball from a nuclear explosion to reach its maximum size, but the effects last for decades and span across generations.

The Hibakusha (survivors of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) are integral to the history of the atomic bombings of these cities - not only because they are among the few true nuclear weapons experts to have experienced the actual impact of these weapons - but also because of the tireless efforts of many Hibakusha to eliminate nuclear weapons.

To learn more, you can find a vast number of Hibakusha testimonies online, but good starting places are Hibakusha Stories and the 1945 project, as well as these resources by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.

World leaders must heed the calls of Hibakusha, and of concerned citizens around the world, for a nuclear-weapon-free future.

International Day Against Nuclear Tests

August 29th, 2024

Since nuclear weapons testing began on 16 July 1945, over 2,000 have taken place. In the early days of nuclear testing little consideration was given to its devastating effects on human life, let alone the dangers of nuclear fallout from atmospheric tests. Hindsight and history have shown us the terrifying and tragic effects of nuclear weapons testing, especially when controlled conditions go awry, and in light of the far more powerful and destructive nuclear weapons that exist today.

It is the hope of the UN that one day all nuclear weapons will be eliminated. Until then, there is a need to observe International Day against Nuclear Tests as the world works towards promoting peace and security.

Repression: Feminist Confrontations of Violent Industries, and Movements to Abolish Them

Authors: Ray Acheson, Katrin Geyer, Genevieve Riccoboni, Laura Varella

This report investigates the nexus between the nuclear and fossil fuel industries, and state repression of activism against these industries. It analyses, from a feminist and gender-transformative perspective, trends and parallels in how the nuclear and fossil fuel industries operate and entrench their power; their impacts on communities, including gendered impacts; and the ways in which resistance against these industries is suppressed by police, militaries, and private military and security companies.

Drawn from research and consultation with activists, organisers, academics, and members of impacted communities, this research aims to create a shared knowledge base and illuminate paths forward for deeper collaboration across movements, including, but not limited to, among antinuclear, environmental, and land and water defence movements.

Nobel Women's Initiative 2023 Annul Report

We are pleased to share NWI's 2023 Annual Report. Never has a feminist vision for peace been more urgent than in our current global climate. 2023 was marked by alarming levels of conflict and a staggering number of conflict-related deaths. And still, in Sudan, in Ukraine, in Afghanistan, in the DRC, women rallied for peace.

In this report we share but a few of the impactful stories of our collective efforts with individuals, movements and communities whose vision for a sustainable peace is unwavering. We are proud of the progress we've made. We are privileged to work with activists, movements and partners across sectors and across the globe.

Pragmatics of Community Organization
it is a pragmatic approach to understanding and planning social justice actions. it is relevant to local, national and yes international actions. so current in its context, so focused in a framework of social justice and non-violence; but also provides a useful discussion of civil disobedience as being necessary/important in any true democracy.  previous editions have been translated into several languages and it has been used in many global settings - african, australian; romanian, etc etc. It is important to note that Indigenous communities across canada and australia have long long relied on this text and its tools, its consciousness raising context, and framework for many years.
i believe as activists and organizers you will return time and again to this text; i believe your copy will end up with scribbles in the margins and dog-eared pages a very very valuable tool in our efforts to work toward a more just, peaceful, green world.

Support the VOW Tru Earth Fundraiser!
Support VOW by shopping for your everyday eco-friendly essentials with Tru Earth!

Tru Earth products are manufactured in Canada and have plastic-free packaging. When you order through our fundraising page, 20% of the total sales value will go to VOW.

Every year 700,000,000 laundry jugs are unable to be recycled and end up in landfills. To date Tru Earth and our community of Change Makers have helped reduced this by 2 million with our revolutionary laundry strip technology.

You can feel good knowing you are supporting VOW and purchasing products that reduce environmental impacts.
