This session aims to explore the role of women’s leadership for climate action and corporates efforts to sustainability.

River Run 2024: Walk with Grassy Narrows for Mercury Justice!
In-Person Event
Wednesday, September 18th, 2024
Grange Park, Toronto
12pm ET

Walk with Grassy Narrows youth and community members to show that we are with them on their path to achieve mercury justice and freedom!

This is a family-friendly event. Rain or shine!

Grassy Narrows secured a historic no logging on their territory for the next 10 years agreement and important promises to clean their river and build a Mercury Care Home. They have the longest-running blockade in Canadian history, which has helped foster Indigenous resistance across Turtle Island and saved 15 million trees from being cut.

But so much is still needed to right the wrong of mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows.

In September 2024, community members and leaders will travel 1,700km from Grassy Narrows to Toronto to demand that Ontario and Canada:

  1. Compensate everyone in Grassy Narrows fairly for the mercury crisis.
  2. Respect the Grassy Narrows Indigenous Protected Area (end mining and logging plans in Grassy Narrows territory).
  3. Support Grassy Narrows in restoring their community and way of life from the damage that mercury has done.

Check out FreeGrassy.net for more details as the event approaches.

Arms Embargo? Webinar
Virtual Event
Wednesday, September 18th, 2024
2:30pm ET

The Canadian Friends Service Committee and Peace Brigades International-Canada invite you to attend a webinar on the export of Canadian military goods to Israel.

September 18 is the 6-month anniversary of the House of Commons vote to “cease the further authorization and transfer of arms exports to Israel.”

And yet, as The Maple has reported, the Trudeau government authorized at least $28.5 million of new permits for military exports to Israel in the months prior to the vote; there are $94.5 million in unused export permits with expiry dates as late as December 31, 2025; and Quebec-based General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Inc. has been approved by the US government to be the principal contractor in the “possible” sale of $83 million in high explosive mortar cartridges and related equipment to Israel.

This webinar will provide an update on the current situation of arms exports to Israel, highlight Canada’s international human rights obligations, and help build support for Members of Parliament to endorse an arms embargo.

Confirmed speakers: Noam Perry (American Friends Service Committee) and Kelsey Galllagher (Project Plougshares). More speakers to be announced.

First Annual Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice
World BEYOND War
In-Person & Virtual Event
September 21-28

The First Annual Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice will run from September 21-28 and will involve a wide range of events and actions organized by groups around the world, from webinars to advocacy events to demonstrations. This year's theme is "Divest From War, Invest In Climate Justice." Why join?:

  • To raise public awareness of the crucial links between war, militarism, and climate injustice;

  • To build connections between peace and climate justice movements;

  • To build momentum for collective action and policymaking against militarism and for climate justice.

Please enter your event here. Get inspired to create or join an event by looking at the Events Calendar for the Week of Action here!

We need to invest in building a safer and fairer world in the long-term, rather than in fueling war and militarism, which are helping to drive climate and environmental harm. It is time to move the money from militarization to just forms of climate action. It is time to break the ties with military and fossil power, for the world's wealthiest to reckon with colonialism, and make progress on reparations for loss and damage. Groups are welcome to focus on the linkages between peace and climate justice that are most important to them in their actions, but we invite people to unite behind a common demand to divest from war – invest in climate justice!

Our toolkit for action includes suggested ways to take action, key messages, resources, and links to folders where we will upload social media materials and a press release when they are ready. You can access it here.

We are so excited to see what you have planned!

Scholasticide: Erasing Memory, Silencing Dissent, and Waging War on Education from Gaza to the West
Article

"The ongoing and increasingly meticulous documentation of Israel’s war crimes not only exposes the horrific realities on the ground but also sheds light on the broader implications of these violations. The unfolding crisis extends beyond the immediate brutality and physical destruction in Gaza, revealing a deeper, insidious form of violence that transcends the battlefield. This violence is rooted in an ideological agenda that legitimizes such barbarism while systematically attacking any form of education and criticism that seeks to expose it. This assault manifests as both a soft and hard war on education, history, critical inquiry, and any viable movement of dissent. Karma Nabulsi of the University of Oxford called this “war on education” a form of scholasticide and argued that it would affect generations of Palestinian children."

By Henry A. Giroux

Demand Israel stop escalating violence that could spur World War III

Canadian officials immediately condemned Iran for launching missiles towards Israel, but they ignored Israel’s brazen war crime that elicited Iran’s reaction. In so doing, they are enabling Israel to escalate its violence on Iran and the region, which could spur a global conflict.

Take a minute to email Justin Trudeau, Melanie Joly and Jagmeet Singh to demand they condemn Israel’s violence and reduce direct Canadian complicity with the Israeli military.

Arms Embargo NOW
We’re coming together to demand the Canadian government impose a full, immediate arms embargo on Israel.

Canadian companies and subsidiaries supply a wide range of components to Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jet program, from machined parts, fuselage sections, and electro-hydraulic actuation system components, to power & thermal management system controllers...
  • Companies that participate in the F-35 program include: Honeywell, Magellan Aerospace, Apex Industries, ASCO Aerospace Canada, Ben Machine Products, PCC Aerostructures Centra and others.
  • Lockheed Martin’s F-35 fighter jets have become emblematic of the loophole that allows Canadian-made weapons components to be transferred, unregulated and unreported, to Israel via the U.S.
  • Héroux-Devtek, headquartered in Quebec, contributes parts and landing gear to Boeing’s F-15 fighter jet  program. It’s among the Canadian companies that supply components for Boeing’s F-15s, which are used by the Israeli Air Force to bomb Gaza.
  • Canadian companies also supply parts for Boeing’s AH-64 Apache helicopters, which are also used by the Israeli Air Force.

No to NATO’s 2% GDP Target! Call on the Canadian government to cut military spending

NATO drives Canada’s rising military spending. In 2014, NATO allies pledged to increase their military spending to 2% of gross domestic product (GDP). According to NATO’s latest Defence Expenditures report, over the past ten years, Canada’s military spending has increased 100% from $20 billion in 2014 to over $40 billion this year, which is 1.4% of GDP. By 2030, Canada’s military spending will increase to $50 billion, which will be 1.7% of GDP. Military spending diverts crucial resources away from public needs putting more Canadians in poverty. Tell your Member of Parliament and the Prime Minister you don’t support NATO’s 2% GDP target, you want military spending cut for social and environmental needs and you want Canada out of NATO.

Taxpayer-subsidized charitable donations may well be Canada’s most important contribution to Palestinian dispossession;

Over the last five years, more than a billion dollars has been sent by Canadian charities to Israeli recipients. While some of this money may find its way into charitable ventures, a portion goes toward supporting the Israeli military and/or illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, activities which stand in contravention of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) regulations and Canada’s public policy...

We, the undersigned, citizens or residents of Canada, call upon the Minister of National Revenue to:

1. Immediately investigate all Canadian charities providing funds to illegal Israeli settlement activity and/or the Israeli military;
2. Revoke the charitable status of all found to not be in compliance; and
3. Take concrete steps to prevent other organizations from engaging in such activities in the future.

Days of Significance
International Day of Peace

September 21st, 2024

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world each year on 21 September. Established in 1981 by unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.

This year is particularly significant: It is the 25th Anniversary of the UN Resolution on the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. A/RES/53/243 B

In that declaration, the United Nations’ most inclusive body recognized that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”

Let us all create Peace Day every day!

International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

September 26th, 2024

Achieving global nuclear disarmament is the highest disarmament priority of the United Nations. It was the subject of the General Assembly’s first resolution in 1946, which established the Atomic Energy Commission (dissolved in 1952), with a mandate to make specific proposals for the control of nuclear energy and the elimination of atomic weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction. The United Nations has been at the forefront of many major diplomatic efforts to advance nuclear disarmament since. In 1959, the General Assembly endorsed the objective of general and complete disarmament. In 1978, the first Special Session of the General Assembly Devoted to Disarmament further recognized that nuclear disarmament should be the priority objective in the field of disarmament. Every United Nations Secretary-General has actively promoted this goal.

In accordance with General Assembly resolution 68/32 and subsequent resolutions, the purpose of the International Day is to further the objective of the total elimination of nuclear weapons through enhancing public awareness and education about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination. In so doing, it is hoped that these activities will help to mobilize new international efforts towards achieving the common goal of a of a nuclear-weapon-free world.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation was created as part of the mandate of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). The TRC was charged to listen to Survivors, their families, communities and others affected by the residential school system and educate Canadians about their experiences. The resulting collection of statements, documents and other materials now forms the sacred heart of the NCTR.

Here, Survivors, their families, educators, researchers, and the public can examine the residential school system more deeply with the goal of fostering reconciliation and healing.
