Disarmament Education Workshops

One of many significant highlights of our journey includes the disarmament education workshops conducted at high schools and elementary schools along the route. These disarmament workshops aim to inspire the next generation to embrace peaceful conflict resolution, advocate for nonviolence, and be a part of a larger project to institutionalize disarmament education. Our facilitators engaged with students interested in joining the movement and hosting their own peace walk! We also connected with staff interested in incorporating disarmament education into their classrooms.

International #PeaceDay-September 21st, 2024

Our final event began with a Silent meditation and the World Peace Pavilion in Dartmouth, followed by the crossing of the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge into Halifax, NS. Walkers visited the Swami Vivekananda Temple and Ummah Masjid and Community Centre. For the afternoon, walkers and welcomed guests attended our International Peace Day event at Dalhousie University. Our event featured the inspiring words of Senator Marilou McPhedran, Robin Collins from the Canadian Pugwash Group, and celebrated poet, journalist, professor and activist Dr. El Jones. As the afternoon’s event came to a close, walkers joined together for the evening to walk to the Halifax harbour, where the initiative ended with a poignant water ceremony— symbolizing our unity and commitment to peace.

Together, we are making a meaningful impact in our communities by advocating for a culture of peace and disarmament.

A Nonviolent March through Nova Scotia, Canada

Article by Jill Carr-Harris, VOW Board Member

"Walking Together for Peace was a historic event. It was a 200-kilometer, two-week walk by a core group of 25 people led by local Mi’ kmaq women water walkers –known as the Grassroots Grandmothers. The walk traversed from Pugwash southward through Truro to Halifax on secondary roads, ironically, through a province that has many veterans and a distinct naval presence. The open vistas of the roadways gave the walkers a sense of the immense possibilities in Canada of making a reset in policies towards creating a more peaceful world. One of the ways the peace walkers suggested throughout, was to sign the UN Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

The leadership, that rolled out this two-week event, was shared by eight women, each who had unique skills to add to the mix of this successful march. Collective leadership is often a tricky business to enact decisions yet these women had a powerful vision of “the feminine” in peacemaking in stark contrast to the might is right politics of today. They were: Lyn Adamson, Canadian Voice of Women for Peace and Jill Carr-Harris, international peace educator and trainer in nonviolence; Kathrin Winkler from the Nova Scotia Voice of Women; Ellen Woodsworth, from Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom; Joy Masuhara a peace activist; Doreen Bernard, Mariam Nicholas and Amy Mahoney, the Indigenous Grandmothers who guided the walkers across Mi’kmaq territory. These strong women leaders ‘braided together the larger peace issues of demilitarize, decolonize and decarbonize”."

“The Walk4Peace has inspired hope, solidarity and joy around the world. The people of Nova Scotia have opened their hearts and minds to us rushing out of their homes to talk to us, offer us tea, bathrooms, a swim in the river in their backyard and give us hugs. They have spontaneously joined the march for a few hours or days.

Last night we had a zoom call with solidarity walkers in India. The strong desire for peace in the midst of growing wars, genocide and nuclear proliferation gives all the peacewalkers the sense of urgency and the power to build the peace movement.”

Walk for Peace in Solidarity for Global Harmony

Article by Hannah Hadikin, VOW's Co-Chair.

"It is a time in the world when citizens have lost trust in their governments. A time when none of the leaders in the whole Western world have' Building World Peace and Not Guns' on their agendas. A time when more money is spent on militarization than on investments in a culture of peace."

Sign the Petition: Pardon Julian Assange!
VOW has been steadfast in our advocacy for Julian Assange over the past many years. His persecution and prosecution has been an incredible violation of his personal human rights and, also, of the right of all of us to a free press and our ability to know what our governments are doing in our name. Many of you signed on to access our screening of the important film, ITHAKA this past Spring. Thank you.

Now that Julian is finally free, we hope you will sign this petition to President Biden for a pardon. His conviction sends a chilling message to any and all who will share classified information about war crimes and violations of human rights in the future.

https://www.action.assangecampaign.org.au/

On October 1st, Julian will be making his first public statement since his release from Belmarsh. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has invited him to speak. This is monumental.

On September 22, world leaders meeting at the UN for the Summit of the Future adopted a Pact for the Future which included commitments to strengthen multilateral action and cooperation on key issues impacting on the future. (See See UN adopts ground-breaking Pact for the Future to transform global governance, UN press release).

The Pact included commitments on preventing nuclear war and achieving global nuclear disarmament. However, these commitments are vague and do not include comprehensive measures for implementation, nor a time-frame for achieving the global elimination of nuclear weapons.

Peace and disarmament organizations including Basel Peace Office had submitted stronger nuclear risk-reduction and disarmament proposals, some of which were included in the Peoples Pact for the Future, a joint civil society advocacy document for the Summit.

In this event on October 1, civil society leaders involved in the UN Summit of the Future and in the global nuclear abolition movement will discuss the nuclear risk-reduction and disarmament commitments agreed at the Summit, as well as the civil society proposals to the Summit, and campaigns for their implementation.

Building Connections: Across the Antinuclear and Climate Movements
Virtual Event
Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024
9:30am– 11:00am ET.

WILPF's Women, Peace and Security Programme, Reaching Critical Will, and WILPF's Environment Programme have recently published a new report investigating the nexus between the nuclear and fossil fuel industries, and state repression of activism against these industries.

'Petrobromance,' Nuclear Priesthood, and Police Repression: Feminist Confrontations of Violent Industries, and Movements to Abolish Them analyses, from a feminist and gender-transformative perspective, trends and parallels in how the nuclear and fossil fuel industries operate and entrench their power; their impacts on communities, including gendered impacts; and the ways in which resistance against these industries is suppressed by police, militaries, and private military and security companies. Drawn from research and consultation with activists, organisers, academics, and members of impacted communities, this research aims to create a shared knowledge base and illuminate paths forward for deeper collaboration across movements, including, but not limited to, among antinuclear, environmental, and land and water defence movements.

Join us on Wednesday, 2 October 2024 at 09:30-11:00 EDT, with Edwick Madzimure and Joni Seager, moderated by Ray Acheson and Genevieve Riccoboni, to discuss the report's main findings!

Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace:
Peace Meal 2024
In-Person Event
Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024

Gandhi Jayanti, which falls on October 2 every year, is commemorated to honour the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. In 2023 the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace hosted "peace meals" in Halifax and Edmonton. The purpose of these meals was to informally engage others in dialogue about non-violence over a shared meal.

This year we would like to invite you, members and non-members, to host your own "peace meals" with family and friends on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti. The gatherings can be large or small, but we invite you to document your "peace meal" using photos, video or text and send them to us by using the contact information found here. We will then, with your permission, share your stories on our website and social media.

The Global Network:
Keep Space for Peace Week
In-Person Events
October 5th-12th, 2024

Every October the GN calls for global actions to support “Keep Space for Peace Week”

With the current US-NATO expansion happening worldwide, seeking full spectrum dominance, we are viewing our Keep Space for Peace Week this year as the most important one since the Global Network was founded in 1992. The prospects for space-directed WW3 between the US-NATO and Russia, China and Iran are greater than ever.

Most of the global public has little to no understanding how space technology these days is in the driver’s seat of modern warfare. Thus we feel the enormous need to increase our efforts to help plant the seeds in the international public consciousness about keeping space for peace.

So we hope that you and others in your community will find ways to help us reach out to the people and sprout these crucial seeds during this extremely dangerous moment.

This year during space4peace week we wish to highlight the unprecedented role of satellite technology in targeted killings in Gaza and beyond.

These days of remembrance are a chance to reconnect with our shared humanity, reflect deeply, and stand firmly against violence and oppression.

Let us honour those who have suffered, not just in our words but in our actions. Let us be the voice of the silenced, the hope for the hopeless, and the strength for the oppressed. Together, let us prove that nonviolence is not weakness but the most powerful force we possess—a global force capable of bending the arc of history toward justice.

October 5th is an important day in the calendar of all friends of Palestine around the world. While it is two days before the actual anniversary, it is the day when many events have been organized to mark the One Year Anniversary of the Israeli genocide. WRFP will mark the day with two important events. Firstly, will be the Walk with Grief at Kitchener Market at 11am, the October 5th walk will be a huge and heartbreaking milestone, it will be the 52nd walk in a year of flowing blood in Gaza. You have been there in body or spirit every Saturday for a year.

Also, on Saturday October 5th at 7pm there will be a powerful anniversary event at St Andrew's Church, Queen/Weber in Kitchener. This event, "UNTHINKABLE- Gaza One Year Later" will bring together a great panel of dedicated resistors to explore and discuss the facts, the issues, the barriers and the actions towards liberation of Palestine. This will be an evening for everyone, a chance to hear different ideas and to share your ideas with others. It will be an evening where local Palestinian groups and allies will all come together and we would love you to be there. Free admission.

It is a crushing anniversary to mark so much death, suffering and brutality in a world that seems to stand and watch, but,  in solidarity, we will come together, we will not allow this vile Israeli genocide to be normalized, we will mark the day when Palestine stood up to save the world, paying the heaviest price imaginable. . It is a very important day. Please mark your calendar and be sure to join us.

Demand Israel stop escalating violence that could spur World War III

Canadian officials immediately condemned Iran for launching missiles towards Israel, but they ignored Israel’s brazen war crime that elicited Iran’s reaction. In so doing, they are enabling Israel to escalate its violence on Iran and the region, which could spur a global conflict.

Take a minute to email Justin Trudeau, Melanie Joly and Jagmeet Singh to demand they condemn Israel’s violence and reduce direct Canadian complicity with the Israeli military.

2024 Women, Peace and Security Civil Society Open Letter

As we approach the 25th anniversary of Resolution 1325, the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda's vision of peace and equality has never been so important — or so under threat. Yet, feminist movements continue to fight back against misogyny and repression, for a more just and peaceful future. We refuse to accept anything less than our rights — and neither should the international community.

Ahead of the upcoming UN Security Council Open Debate on WPS, we are calling on the Security Council to take decisive action in 10 areas to protect women's rights in conflict.

Join us in calling for urgent action to deliver on 25 years of the WPS agenda: sign on to our open letter by 4 October, available in English, Arabic, French and Spanish.

Stop Killer Robots: #VoteAgainstTheMachine

You are more than data so states need to vote against the machine at this year’s UNGA.

Machines don’t know that you’re #MoreThanData - to them you’re just another piece of code. It’s time to take AI making life and death decisions off the table.

The regulation of Artificial Intelligence needs to catch up to the pace of innovation. If we accept the use of AI to dehumanize and kill people in conflicts, this has consequences for the use of these technologies in policing, border control and more. Call on your gov’t to #VoteAgainstTheMachine and support the resolution against killer robots at the UNGA this October.

Days of Significance
International Day of Non-Violence

October 2nd, 2024

The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on 2 October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence.

According to General Assembly resolution A/RES/61/271 of 15 June 2007, which established the commemoration, the International Day is an occasion to "disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness". The resolution reaffirms "the universal relevance of the principle of non-violence" and the desire "to secure a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence".

The principle of non-violence — also known as non-violent resistance — rejects the use of physical violence in order to achieve social or political change. Often described as "the politics of ordinary people", this form of social struggle has been adopted by mass populations all over the world in campaigns for social justice.

Muriel Duckworth's Birthday
October 31st

Duckworth was a founding member of the Nova Scotia Voice of Women for Peace, a provincial branch of the national peace organization called the Voice of Women (VOW). Within a month of her participation with NSVOW, the group had successfully blocked the United States from dumping nuclear waste off the coast of Nova Scotia.

From 1967 to 1971, she served as president of VOW leading protests against the Canadian government's quiet support for the US-led war in Vietnam.

If you’re going to talk about peace, you’ve got to talk to the people on the other side”

— Muriel Duckworth

Muriel Duckworth played a pivotal role in the creation and development of Canadian women’s social and peace movements at the local, provincial, and national levels. Recognized for her contributions by many institutions, she received eight honorary doctorates from universities, is a member of the Order of Canada, and received the Person’s Award. But despite these and many other awards, it was her ability to motivate and mobilize communities into activism, her championing of diversity, and her relentless commitment to creating a better world that are truly her greatest achievements.

Anniversary of Resolution 1325

October 31st, 2024

The Security Council adopted resolution (S/RES/1325) on women and peace and security on 31 October 2000. The resolution reaffirms the important role of women in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, peace negotiations, peace-building, peacekeeping, humanitarian response and in post-conflict reconstruction and stresses the importance of their equal participation and full involvement in all efforts for the maintenance and promotion of peace and security. Resolution 1325 urges all actors to increase the participation of women and incorporate gender perspectives in all United Nations peace and security efforts. It also calls on all parties to conflict to take special measures to protect women and girls from gender-based violence, particularly rape and other forms of sexual abuse, in situations of armed conflict. The resolution provides a number of important operational mandates, with implications for Member States and the entities of the United Nations system.

Summit of the Future Outcome Documents, September 2024:
Pact for the Future

On the opening day of the UN Summit of the Future yesterday, world leaders adopted a ground-breaking Pact for the Future that also includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations (See UN adopts ground-breaking Pact for the Future to transform global governance, UN press release, September 22).

This Pact is the culmination of an inclusive, years-long process to adapt international cooperation to the realities of today and the challenges of tomorrow.  As the Secretary-General has said, "we cannot create a future fit for our grandchildren with a system built by our grandparents."

While innovative and ground-breaking, the PACT is not as ambitious as hoped by many like-minded governments and civil society networks who had advanced a range of even stronger proposals for better global governance to ensure peace, environmental protection, human rights, democracy and sustainability for current and future generations. See, for example, the Peoples Pact for the Future.
